[ - ] We're starting to think about sleep-away camp for dd next year. We'd prefer to send her somewhere relatively close to home; maybe PA, NJ or NY state. Does anyone have any suggestions for camps to look at? A friend recommended Lake Bryn Mawr Camp in PA. http://www.campbrynmawr.com/ It looks great, but it's all-girls and dd is already at a ss ongoing, so we're thinking a co-ed camp might be a nice change. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think that it is wrong to string your employer along if you know that you're not going back to work. This makes it a lot harder for women who do go back and makes employers much more hesitant to offer extended benefits from what is required by law. Would you want to offer paid maternity leave if you found that 50% of the women that said they were coming back didn't? [ Reply | More ]

in terms of what response to give your boss, i'd say very firmly but politely that you don't want to make any decisions until you see how things are going. (you might want to add that you would like to know what options will be available to you.) and as for yourself, i can say that for most people it's very common to have children and then feel some sort of regret/nostalgia for whatever road you are not taking. but you'll be much better off putting off any decisions until after you have settled in with the baby. otherwise you'll be putting so much pressure on yourself. every time you'll have a hard time putting the baby to sleep or having woken up four times overnight to feed your baby, you'll be saying "i'm going back to work". and then you'll give your baby a bath and he/she will smell so good and you'll say "forget it, i can't go back to work". you'll tie yourself up in knots instead of just focusing on the challenges and wonders involved with caring for a new baby. so what i'd suggest is that you take a look at your finances to know what you'll need or what options you'll have in terms of working or sah'ing. then i'd maybe make a list of pros and cons for working vs. sahm'ing, as you see it right now. then shelve that list and readdress the issue when your db is 4 weeks old. best of luck. ^^^darn. i put so much effort into that post. here's the summary: when you have a good moment with your baby you'll say 'i'm not going back to work'. you'll tie yourself in knots instead of just focusing on the baby and dealing with the normal ups and downs of having a newborn. i'd suggest making a list to yourself of the pros and cons of working vs sahm'ing, as you see them now. also look at your finances. then shelve the list and readdress it with your dh when your baby is 4 weeks old. good luck. If you feel like there is a chance you'd want to come back - and it sounds like there is - you should say you're coming back. If you figure out during pregnancy, maternity leave or back at work that you'd rather be at home, then that's that. You have a right to change your mind. It's your life. In the grand scheme of things, it won't be too much of an inconvenience for your employer; replacing workers who leave is something they all ave to deal with. [ Reply | More ]

kids still want to get together, whether you call it a playdate or not. and as they get older, they want to spend more and more time together, meaning a longer amount of time [ Reply | More ]

funny. we are talking about elementary schools here. Teenagers is an entirely different thing and it is not YOU who has to schlepp the kids from one place to the other. They are on their own and do whatever they want to do. [ Reply | More ]

This post is about goint to a g&t and not your zoned school. That applys only to elementary. Middle schools don't have g&t programs. Come on. Just give. you know you are wrong. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly - so your arugument while not releveant to elementary and g&t and playdates also makes no sense for middle school either. The children split up and scatter [ Reply | More ]

you're missing my point, which is that it's easier to stay friends with someone in the nabe even if you end up at different schools in later years than it is to stay friends with someone who lives in another boro AND you no longer go to school with [ Reply | More ]

I'm just speaking from experience. we sent dd out of neighborhood, so now all her friends live in Brooklyn and the Bronx and it limits her socializing. I know this post is about elementary school; I'm just saying the friends you make in elem school are often friends for life, but only usually if they're in the neighborhood [ Reply | More ]

And I disagree that elementary school friends matter. For me personally, it was HS & college friends (and I lived in the same small town my whole life). And I see my MS dc moving away from his elementary school friends (at the same MS). So IMO it doesn't really matter. [ Reply | More ]

right. but I was looking at it from the point of view that if you're in a neighborhood school in primary school, your friends live in the neighborhood. when you get older you make new friends but keep the old, so you still have friends nearby. but as someone pointed out, D3 is so small it's not really an issue. this is a perfect example why UB would be so much better if you could only post to one board. I'm not on NY Schools, but I am on New York City. I responded to a post that seemed relevant to my experience but turns out really isn't [ Reply | More ]

I'm smothering under all the blankets. Not all G&Ts are equal. Not all Gen Eds are equal. Not all kids have the same needs. Some Gen Eds might just be better for some high-scoring kids than the G&T they were assigned to. That's all. It's a matter of individual needs and meeting them. G&T isn't always better academically, Gen Ed isn't always better socially. Blanket statements are made by idiots. And boy are there a lot of them here today. It’s OK to feel good about your own choice without insisting it is the best one for everyone else too. Move on with your own life and realize that your choice isn't the only choice. [ Reply | More ]
