i think several things about this. i think people are more resistant to change than they think they are. i also think a lot of city dwellers grew up in the suburbs and were so adamant about moving to the city that they convinced themselves it's the only good place to be. [ Reply | More ]

So you don't allow that we like the diversity; That we find the cultural/educational oppourtunities rewarding. It is only inertia which keeps us from wanting to leave NYC for some 1/4 acre of suburban grass to mow each weekend. We are deluded to prefer mass transit and neighborhood shops to highways and strip malls. [ Reply | More ]

ITD, and it has nothing to do with being "cool". My brother and SIL live in the burbs w/ dc and you couldn't pay me to trade places with them. They need 2 cars, have to drive everywhere w/ the dc to do anything, their social group is way too homogeneous for my tastes, there's almost nothing going on culturally, etc. The only thing they have that I envy a little is space, but otoh they're always complaining about the yard maintenance, or they need to paint the house, clean the gutters and the garage, mend the fence, or what have you. Today, we were at at playdate and one of the other girls started saying "She thinks she is a boy!" and all the other moms looked at me with these expressions like they had talked about it. They then started asking me, "why do you think she does that?" It was clear that they had all had some sort of discussion about her saying this. Not sure if it's abnormal, but people are always paranoid about gender issues. Maybe you could talk with your ped and ask what he/she thinks. I know that won't solve the issue with the other mothers, but frankly - fuck the other mothers and their narrow gossiping minds. [ Reply | More ]

i think the gender thing makes people uncomfortable. my dd's friend spent 6 months insisting she was dora. she'd get offended if anyone called her by her real name or called her sister anything but "boots." i don't think pretending to be a boy is any different. but people react more strongly to that kind of thing just like they react more strongly to biting than they do to hitting. (and, if you think about it - both biting and hitting are simply forms of aggression - neither is objectively better or worse than the other.) [ Reply | More ]

DC? sorry to rain on your parade but DC is going to have new set of issues for you waiting. DC isn't large enough like NYC for you not to care about the jones'. [ Reply | More ]

I love dc, there are jones' everywhere you go. A ton of people here on UB certainly wouldn't agree with you about NYC and not bothering to keep up with the Jones' [ Reply | More ]

we moved to Dc and were back shortly thereafter..snoooze...very cliquey too...and boring. if you are doing hte burbs try for bethesda/rockville vs. northern va - imo much nicer but $$$ and kind of snobby; Northern VA is redneckish [ Reply | More ]

You're crazy, Northern Va is a MUCH better commute into the city and Arlington and Alexandria are much nicer than rockville. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, I can't think of anything as nice as Bethesda in MD, maybe you're thinking of Takoma Park? That's a cute area, but a bit small for my tastes. I live in Del Ray (a neighborhood in Alexandria) and love it. Lots of families, a ton to do, great community activities, a metro and only 10 minutes from downtown DC by car (not during rush hour).
