Why is it better to be in a g&t program than a general ed program in public school? I saw a post about this, but can't remember. it had something to do with NCLB and testing?? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

In a good G&T program they don't need to spend as much time prepping for the math and ELA tests as in general eds, so they can focus on a broader curriculum. [ Reply | More ]

Nothing to do with NCLB. Everything to do with peer group IMO. But - it depends on the G&T program and it depends on the gen ed program. [ Reply | More ]

It isn't always. In my experience at PS116, there were years when she would have done better in one of the gen ed classes there. Very teacher-dependent. [ Reply | More ]

In last year's pre K class my ds was reading when class mates didn't recognize their own names. This year, in his G&T, he is one of the better readers but certainly not the only one at his level. So the teacher can work with him and peers at once. There are appropriate materials for them. Etc. [ Reply | More ]

Teachers can work with kids at different reading levels in gen ed as well in K. [ Reply | More ]

np. This is the standard line, but I've seen how it works in practice, and the reality is that the advanced dc in general eds are typically left to "work independently" or with a classmate while the other dc get most of the teacher's hands-on attention. [ Reply | More ]

it is not in general but sometimes the particular G&T your kid can in to is better than the particular zoned school your kid can get in to [ Reply | More ]
