I don't understand why people think it's cool to stay in NYC to raise a family. I think it's so hard to raise children here, even if you have a ton of money. Anyone else agree? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm finding life easier in the suburbs, but personally a little less rewarding. [ Reply | More ]

Where do I begin! Space in the apartment to play, hangout, have playdates in, Groceries, and everything else that Kids need to have, like bikes, playing tag outside etc. [ Reply | More ]

yes I can see the outdoor space is an issue and also transportation (if it is not within walking distance). [ Reply | More ]

i think several things about this. i think people are more resistant to change than they think they are. i also think a lot of city dwellers grew up in the suburbs and were so adamant about moving to the city that they convinced themselves it's the only good place to be. [ Reply | More ]

So you don't allow that we like the diversity; That we find the cultural/educational oppourtunities rewarding. It is only inertia which keeps us from wanting to leave NYC for some 1/4 acre of suburban grass to mow each weekend. We are deluded to prefer mass transit and neighborhood shops to highways and strip malls. [ Reply | More ]

Cool is not the word I would use. I find it rewarding. I find it fulfulling. I find it envigorating. And in truth, I think the suburbs are not easier. They are just different. [ Reply | More ]

ditto! i have a smile on my face everyday; we moved away and i felt dead inside. not for everyone - but our kids will certainly grow up to be interesting well rounded people. [ Reply | More ]

ITD, and it has nothing to do with being "cool". My brother and SIL live in the burbs w/ dc and you couldn't pay me to trade places with them. They need 2 cars, have to drive everywhere w/ the dc to do anything, their social group is way too homogeneous for my tastes, there's almost nothing going on culturally, etc. The only thing they have that I envy a little is space, but otoh they're always complaining about the yard maintenance, or they need to paint the house, clean the gutters and the garage, mend the fence, or what have you. ita! plus, transportation in the city is a pain when you have more than one young dc, but as they get a little older it is easier than the burbs. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. And especially now, with the crazy gas prices, I'm beyond thrilled we don't need a car - let alone TWO of them. [ Reply | More ]

True, some people love the burbs, but I would hate it. To each her own. [ Reply | More ]

and yet we have this argument over and over. I don't understand why so many people think that their way is the only way and everyone else *really* feels the same but won't admit it [ Reply | More ]

I disagree--I love raising my kids in NYC and don't think it's hard. I love getting to work quickly, the parks, the playgrounds, not having to drive anywhere. I realize it helps that we bought our apt. before prices got so high and have a good public school. [ Reply | More ]

But that's the point! We make $170,000, and pay $4,000 in rent/month and $2,200/month to the babysitter. There is almost no mony left, not enough for provate school for sure, and yet our zoned public isn't any good! [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunately $170K isn't very much in NYC. It's just the reality. [ Reply | More ]

That $4K/mo would get you a great space in Brooklyn in one of the good zones. [ Reply | More ]

ITD - I grew up in the suburbs but love having dc here. I think it is so much easier to get around and I don't have to get in an SUV and drive to a strip mall to get stuff (I just get it delievered!) DH grew up here and I was skeptical at first but now I can't see raising kids anywhere else. [ Reply | More ]

When your kids are older they will be able to get around by themselves - you won't have to chauffer them everywhere. [ Reply | More ]
