Why good zoned school near your home (eg, 199, 87is better than a mediocre G&T (eg, 166, 163): 1) Much better social life (playdates); 2) easier commute/more sleep every night; 3) Racial tensions at "ghetto" G&Ts, black DCs, rightly, hate that white DCs get all the resources; 4) Holding Racial/Socio-economics constant, the likelihood that your DC will score "4" and go to Delta/Anderson for MS is the same [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

That is your opinion. Others disagree. We chose 166 over 87. Difference in commute is negligible. If we find that it has racial tensions etc. we will re-evaluate but the zoned school will always be there as a backup if we need it. [ Reply | More ]

had to step away: 1)Has friends attending from preschool 2) Somewhat worried about inclusion classes at 87 3)7 kindergarten classes seems like a lot at 87 4)Like that classes are enriched and taught at faster pace 5) Really like the class offerings in afterschool program (more sports than at 87 from what I see on the web sites)6) We both work so "playdates" are through afterschool or on weekends [ Reply | More ]

1) The kid doesn't care if her friends are close to her home or somewhere else. 2) How many minutes does it really add to your commute? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? 3) You are overly dramatic. You are blowing this out of proportion. 4) Ok. So you pick your school and let others pick theirs. Why the need to comment? [ Reply | More ]

The DC doesn't care but the parent/caregiver who would have to arrange to bring and take the DC back cares. BTDT Most DCs don't have more than 2 hours for a playdate after school anyway, if 1 hour is schlepping it makes a big difference - [ Reply | More ]

right. but I was looking at it from the point of view that if you're in a neighborhood school in primary school, your friends live in the neighborhood. when you get older you make new friends but keep the old, so you still have friends nearby. but as someone pointed out, D3 is so small it's not really an issue. this is a perfect example why UB would be so much better if you could only post to one board. I'm smothering under all the blankets. Not all G&Ts are equal. Not all Gen Eds are equal. Not all kids have the same needs. Some Gen Eds might just be better for some high-scoring kids than the G&T they were assigned to. That's all. It's a matter of individual needs and meeting them. G&T isn't always better academically, Gen Ed isn't always better socially. Blanket statements are made by idiots. And boy are there a lot of them here today. It’s OK to feel good about your own choice without insisting it is the best one for everyone else too. Move on with your own life and realize that your choice isn't the only choice. [ Reply | More ]
