Anybody not taking PS11 G&T spot? We are zoned 234 and still can't decide if I should send DC to G&T or 234 zoned. Seems nice school from what I see in UB. We missed PS 11 tour. Any input? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

We're in the same boat w/ 290 vs. 11. Our concern is location as 290 is UES and 11 is Chelsea. Where is 234? What is your concern... logistics? By the way, if you change filters to NYC, you can read my thread going about 290 vs. 11. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

that is a tough one. Do you work near 11? I would consider commute. Then I would try and decide if my child really needed the smaller class size and being with most of the same friends for six years and I would put middle school app in the 11 column [ Reply | More ]

we are giving up 116 for 11 G&t. think about MS admissions, and no child left behind policy- that really matters after 2nd grade. [ Reply | More ]

so g&t for you is all about making sure you won't have some poor dc in your dc's class? fine if they're down the hall but no way you want them in your classroom? nice. [ Reply | More ]

we're in the same boat. ps11 or 41/3. we're leaning towards either one of the latter. we didn't have a chance to tour 11. [ Reply | More ]

As a mom with friends who just went thru middle school process, I'd think again. All of our friends with children in g&t did better than general ed. And the ge dc were not dumb and had good scores. I think there is an edge to applying out from a g&t. [ Reply | More ]

As a mom who just suffered through the G&T process, I disagree. Depends more on the child than the class. [ Reply | More ]

pros and cons to each. 234 is overcrowded but raises tons of money for specials, etc. and it's nice for dc's classmates to be neighbors. it's reputation is well-established. there's no tension between g&t and gen ed dcs, obviously. 11 has more of a mix of dcs. smaller classes. not every parent makes a gazillion dollars a year. etc. the peer group at 234 is probably very good, so i'm not sure that makes a difference. We are at 11 G&T. I love it there and we live close. If someone offered us a spot at 234, 6 or one of the 'great gen eds' I definitely wouldn't take it over 11 because I wouldn't want to commute. I think the education at 11 G&T is just as good (and the gen ed will probably improve a LOT starting in K next year). The unknown of course is that now they are claiming the district G&Ts are going to be truly 'accelerated' which they aren't now (they claim they just go more 'in depth'). If you truly believe your dc needs an accelerated class then I'd say do 11 and you could always go back to your zoned school if it didn't work out. My dcs are in G&T but I don't think they really need advanced classes so personally, since it's elementary school, I'd pick the closer one. [ Reply | More ]

^school, I'd just pick the one that was closer and easier commute-wise. Also if I lived in a good gen ed zone like 234 and had younger sibs, I'd be more inclined to stay with zoned school as then you won't have to worry about getting #2 in in a few years. I know tons of sibs this year at various G&Ts and citywides who did not make the required cutoffs. [ Reply | More ]
