How come LL scores are not any better than some good GenEds like PS234. Isn't LL just a way for the white families in the 'hood to stay in public since their zoned school (PS198) sucks?? Let's call it what it is, just a segregation schoom 54 years after "Brown vs. Board of Ed." [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

When you look at LL scores, you have to be careful for a couple of reasons. There is a self contained special ed class at LL which has nothing to do with the g&t program but the scores are often combined AND, LL is such a small school that if ONE child is sick or having a bad test day - it affects the overall percentage much more than in a larger general ed school. LL has great scores, is a great school and a nice option for many. Many district 2 general eds are the same. Choice. It's a good thing. [ Reply | More ]

there is a self contained class at LL for the upper grades. a neighbor of mine visited the class and said the teacher was very young, and amazing and the kids seemed quite well behaved. [ Reply | More ]

do the special needs students have to test also to get into LL? How do they qualify? Can they choose between A or LL too? [ Reply | More ]

The special needs students are NOT in the gifted program. They are a self contained special ed class. They are placed by the district. [ Reply | More ]

I suspect your racial references are simply to start an argument. LL is a test into program and the apps are color blind. [ Reply | More ]

True - for some, but many (in some years, most) LL kids are not zoned for 198. D2 is extremely large. And if you account for the inclusion of the self-contained special needs classes, LL scores are usually among the highest in the city (in some years, the highest) and definitely highest in D2. All that said, 198 doesn't "suck," but it is much larger (more classes per grade, though the class size is smaller than LL) and the teaching is more narrow given the make up of the student population. The kids in self contained special ed are mandated to be in certain classes, the test's have nothing to do with it. They go to whatever school has a self contained class with an opening. Parent's do get some say as to where they want their kids to go. [ Reply | More ]

LL scores are better. First, look at the scores for "general education students". That removes the "special education" scores. Second, compare the number of 4s at LL vs the zoned schools you're looking at. To answer questions above, no, the special ed classes are not G&T. They [ Reply | More ]

A school psychologist tests and recommends specific Special Ed services for a child. There is a Special Ed placement office in the Dept of Ed, that places kids in the specific classes where there are openings. It has nothing to do with the test that other kids take to get into G & T. LL scores are significantly better than 234, 290, 6 etc. Over 85% of the scores do not a statistically significant difference between LL Vs. NEST and Anderson. The only real substantial difference (with N & A) is the percentage of 4s on ELA and Math scores for 3rd and 4th. By 5th grade even this difference compresses significantly. [ Reply | More ]
