Kind of off the racism in cartoons post: We are considering moving back from NYC to the town I grew up in NJ. It's always been racially diverse, but now there is a very large South American Hispanic population. From what my parents say, it's very segregated both in schools and in town (they are in same schools, but not really any interaction). I fear that we would be taking DC out of a place that shows real diversity into one where my kids grow up thinking Hispanic people mow lawns and clean houses. Am I overthinking this? all you can do is teach your dc that ppl are ppl no matter what their differences are and to not listen to what other idiots may say. Also make hispanic friends. Kids learn from example [ Reply | More ]

there are always exceptions to this rule. I my rich NJ suburb where I went to school, it was only the hispanics that didn't speak english well that segragated. Most of the hispanics that were fluent in english were well integrated (although fluent in english generally also meant well off as well. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, had a phone call. That is true - nearly all these people are new here, so they do not speak much English. Over time I assume that will change. But right now for DC's childhoods it's very apparent - the difference in language and culture, the disparity in incomes. I would try to make sure DC had friends that were Hispanic, but it could be difficult in that they don't mix much even in school. Thank you both for the perspectives. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ hit return by accident.... It is easier to pick out a group of hispanic kids speaking in spanish than 2 or 3 hispanic kids in another group of mixed kids. If you're really concerned, I would go to the school and just try to be observant on what the mixed race groups look like. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. If you are from NJ, maybe you know the town - Morristown. From the papers and general talk, the situation seems a little tense. Anyway, thanks helping me think this through. If I'm this worried, I think maybe we should look into Maplewood, where the diversity is better balanced right now. [ Reply | More ]

I went to school in Princeton. Keep in mind that this may just be the issue of the day. I doubt that even in NYC kids who only speak spanish are that well integrated. I'm pretty sure that it is a problem everywhere, at least everywhere I've lived, especially once the kids get out of elementary school. [ Reply | More ]
