DC is in 1st grade there (G&T) and it's been a wonderful experience. We have had fabulous teachers and I the smaller class size is a great bonus- We had 18 last year in K and 20 this year. I am floored with the turn around that this school has made since we started 2 years ago. I tried getting info on 11 back then and all I heard were negative comments about the students there (that they were 'rough project kids' etc). We haven't experienced any of this and the school has really made an effort to have each child in a grade get to know everybody in that grade. I can't believe people this year were actually hoping to get in when in years past they struggled to fill their seats. The parent body is super down to earth but very committed to the school. Couldn't be happier there [ Reply | More ]

My child is sufficeintly challenged, I'm not 100% happy with th TERC math but I'll supplement at home (I think they start doing more 'traditional' math mixed in in 2nd grade). They have art once a week, music once a week, they have an afterschool chess team, the older kids do ballroom dance, they swim starting in 2nd grade. I think my dc has a great time there but he says he hates school except for recess (and I don't believe he'd say he like any school)- when I ask him what he did at school he always says "nothing" [ Reply | More ]

Does PS 11 have science, theater, movement classes? Or what kind of enrichment program do they have? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.17.08, 08:20 PM Flag

my understanding is that in grades 3-5 they have science 2x a week. In K-2, they get Science Teacher Sarah about 10 times during the year. They took out science in the younger grades and doubled up the older grades I think since the older kids maybe have some ELA science testing so they figured it mattered more then. (not 100% sure if this is the reason- ask the parent coord. They have theater 1x a week, earlier in the year they had some dance company doing a movement class as an extra special. They have 1 special a day (gym, art, music, computers, theater) [ Reply | More ]

It was actually sort of a wild experience. The first year, I was the only G&T kid, so I was pulled out 3X a week, in first grade, to do these logic games and math puzzles and tell stories. The second year there were three of us, pulled out every day, by 3rd grade, ten of us, and from 5th grade until 8th grade, about 15 or so in a class. The other kids, from an early age were resentful, and the kids in the G&T class were well aware that we were more 'gifted' than the others...its not a good dynamic. [ Reply | More ]

My ds has a lump near his ankle that his orthopedist has told me is an extra bone. He even showed me an xray of a boy who had his removed the day before. But don't worry, he also said that most kids don't need any intervention, sometimes it becomes an issue with sports or if your dc has a leg brace it may become calloused. He related it as very ordinary, of course that doesn't mean your dc has the same, but it sounded very familiar! [ Reply | More ]
