g & t programs are a sign that the system is sick. the programs accelerate the sickness by airlifting some children out. so sad for our kids that they will grow up thinking this is normal and fair. both the children inside and out will suffer. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i don't live in nyc so have no idea if my daughter is 30 percentile or 90. i do know that it is too young to be testing and separating these kids. [ Reply | More ]

agreed. i was in the first G&T class in my school in the 80s and it does generate bad feelings, and i don't think it fair to label kids at such a young age. [ Reply | More ]

It was actually sort of a wild experience. The first year, I was the only G&T kid, so I was pulled out 3X a week, in first grade, to do these logic games and math puzzles and tell stories. The second year there were three of us, pulled out every day, by 3rd grade, ten of us, and from 5th grade until 8th grade, about 15 or so in a class. The other kids, from an early age were resentful, and the kids in the G&T class were well aware that we were more 'gifted' than the others...its not a good dynamic. [ Reply | More ]

this is exactly the sort of thinking this testing and comparing engenders. it's very destructive [ Reply | More ]

Agree. It has helped our dd to get out of a zoned school that is very bad. It was a way to beat the system. The system really sucks.I am not particularily happy about this but I had no choice. The whole idea of gifted 5 yo is silly. [ Reply | More ]

op here: good for you, though, for doing the best of your dd. my complaint is not with the parents at all. i would try to move heaven and earth for my child. but i have a problem with how little money there is for poor or so-called "average" kids. the whole system needs to be overhauled and supported by our culture. There is actually tons of money spent on the "poor" and "average", it is just more likely to be misspent when dealing with those students than when dealing with the middle and upper middle class students of G&T. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. But we would have done it too if we didn't luck out with a great zoned school. [ Reply | More ]

in theory, i agree with you. but in practice, it's the best option for many kids. i went to a terrible public school as a kid, and the g&t program saved me. [ Reply | More ]
