Our ds was diagnosed with pdd-nos and I am researching the rights of autistic children to public education in NY. This is all so new to me. Someone suggested that the best place to move to is NJ. I am not ready to leave NY--all my family is here. Anyone can suggest a usuful sites to visit? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I am not sure of a site. But do not assume that NJ will give you better therapy and schooling. They are tightening strings for services over here, we know several families that were forced to pay for private school in the past few years. [ Reply | More ]

sometimes life doesn't turn out as planned. your ds *is* your family now; you have to do what's right for him, whether it is NY or NJ. [ Reply | More ]

She never said she wouldn't! She just got a diagnosis, is in shock, trying to figure out what to do. Doesn't need your lecture. [ Reply | More ]

You've taught her well then. Never trust the opinion of a parent if they don't also have a SN child. [ Reply | More ]

Don't know very much about this, but I live in Westchester and have heard that Ardsley has terrific special education services/programming (and I know someone who moved from Scarsdale to Ardsley for that reason). GL. [ Reply | More ]

I'm in the Bergen County area and I know certain towns have very large SN programs -- off the top of my head, Franklin Lakes and Hawthorne. [ Reply | More ]

First, I'm sorry. Second, Dc is lucky to have you. You are doing a lot of good by doing research there are wonderful services in NY and NJ. I did the move and am very happy in NJ. You might also want to post on youbemom. There is a book about it and they'll know the name...I'm in NJ and not up to date on NY. If dc was just diagnosed there is a packet on autism speaks on what to do in the first 100 days. It's overwhelming but the sn community is here to help you. [ Reply | More ]
