last year he gave me a simple silver picture frame engraved only with the number of days we had been married. he is not a super sentimental guy, so I loved it. Once I gace him cufflinks and engraved on the back of one was the date we met, the othe the date we married [ Reply | More ]

we've been married 3 years (this week) and we have never exchanged gifts b/c we bought a house and then had a baby the 1st year and another baby 3 weeks after our 2nd anniversary. We were spending enough money. . .so this year I am doing a gift and just bought a beautiful leather frame and put a wedding pic in it since 3rd year is leather. I thought I would go traditional b/c I did [ Reply | More ]

They are diverse schools, so if you disaggregate by race/SES, they are actually very good. Both upper middle class white and upper middle class (meaning, economic and education of parents) score very well on SAT's,(and go to top schools, look at the list) and other groups score well above average as well. The problem is that you are comparing homogenous schools (like Millburn or Chatham, consistently upper middle class and white/Asian) to heterogenous ones (Maplewood and Montclair.) Columbia has over 80 AP scholars most years, has one of the largest selections of AP classes anywhere. Plus the arts are basically the best there is. Our kids are in the schools, my DH and I have several ivy degrees between us, we think the schools are great. Not perfect, but unique. The kids learn to think critically and creatively and get excited about ideas. If that's important to you, then it's a good place. We love it. [ Reply | More ]

I don't feel as though I'm performing at work, but also have a million loose ends at home...and my children aren't behaving. So I know what you're going through. I feel like I suck at EVERYTHING too. No advise except that getting a wireless card for laptop so I can be more productive on my commute has been invaluable. And, I do take some time at night for myself before heading back to the work. Well Duxbury is beautiful so I don't think you can make a bad move there. It is a small, preppy town with a lot of older/historic homes. Having said that, this is a spec house on a street of homes valued at less money (best-house-on-the-block syndrome) and if you were my client I would steer towards something a bit more classic. Having said that, there is a lot to be said for central air and great master suites! [ Reply | More ]

He came out after bedtime and started screaming, running and jumping all over the apartment, so I put him back in his room, and then went to my room and locked the door. One week you need to just keep putting him back and back and back and back and back. No words, no fights, no hiding, no nothin. Just back in. [ Reply | More ]

I think I agree... If mom is hiding that means DS is the boss. IMHO you need to "gird your loins" and prepare to wrest control from that youngin... [ Reply | More ]

that is the million dollar question, isn't it. Immediate consequences for actions that have real meaning to him. what does he love the most ? take it away. [ Reply | More ]

He has so many toys that it never seems to matter when I take them away. The thing that bugs him most is when I take myself away, which is one of the reasons I locked myself away in the first place. [ Reply | More ]

You going away I think is the wrong message... you will always be there, but there must be something he really values... every kid has something that they would be very upset to lose... [ Reply | More ]

np: OP, it sounds like you are trying your best o keep your cool within the framework you have inherited. Perhpas it is time to re-fram bedtime...do it totalllly different...with anew approach. Warn dc about the new rules, etc. I can't rec, since I don't know what you did before, but I do agree with some punitive action related to tonights destruction. What would dh do? [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks for the kind words. It is obvoius that what I do doesn't work. We generally do pjs, tooth brushing, then story and bed. Maybe I could add a few minutes for him to look at books by himself after we read to him so that he can ease into sleep. When dh is here, ds only comes out once or twice to use the bathroom. He knows dh will get really mad, so he doesn't chance it. When I get really mad, he just thinks it's funny. (I have Supernanny book, btw, plus about 50 others. Have taken classes, too( [ Reply | More ]

It seems wrong to blame the kid- you created the situation that generated this behavior. What is dh's take on it all. [ Reply | More ]

duh. he wanted you, and when you locked yourself in your room, he felt abandoned and scared (and, being overtired, out came "the bahvior"). You are on the right track here. BE with him. Just sit in his room as he winds down (or goes like the energizer bunny then crashes, whatever his MO is). [ Reply | More ]

op: I do usually lie down with him for a few minutes at bedtime, but when he's wound up like he was tonight, he climbs and jumps all over me and my presence seems to get him more agitated. I can't take that for very long. I told him repeatedly tonight that if he could stay calmly in his room for 10 minutes that I would come back and lie with him. Anyway, I get your point, but it's just really tough sometimes. [ Reply | More ]
