The stats for NJ schools in Maplewood, South Orange and Montclair are really bad, but people in the areas seem to think the schools are good but just more diverse. What's true? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I"m in Maplewood and the elementary schools are decent (some of them) from what I have heard. My friends w/older kids say if your kid is the top in the class, then Columbia HS is fine, but if they are not, then it's not a good school. Overall they do not have a good rep. [ Reply | More ]

Our three kids went to Tuscan in Maplewood, it was so good that I sometimes told people that I would pay to send my kids there. Our neighbor's kids are there now, they are loving it, too. [ Reply | More ]

They are diverse schools, so if you disaggregate by race/SES, they are actually very good. Both upper middle class white and upper middle class (meaning, economic and education of parents) score very well on SAT's,(and go to top schools, look at the list) and other groups score well above average as well. The problem is that you are comparing homogenous schools (like Millburn or Chatham, consistently upper middle class and white/Asian) to heterogenous ones (Maplewood and Montclair.) Columbia has over 80 AP scholars most years, has one of the largest selections of AP classes anywhere. Plus the arts are basically the best there is. Our kids are in the schools, my DH and I have several ivy degrees between us, we think the schools are great. Not perfect, but unique. The kids learn to think critically and creatively and get excited about ideas. If that's important to you, then it's a good place. We love it. [ Reply | More ]
