Because I know how other city agencies do those things. They do not pay a professional courier service if they don't have to. As I said the way the letters were delivered was not professionally. Do you think real couriers would leave letters taped to doors or pushed under doors? [ Reply | More ]

i think it would be way cheaper to pay private couriers, because they pay messengers way less than unionized doe employees (who would have had to be paid overtime for working over last weekend). "Real" couriers do what they are told to do, if they were told it's ok to tape letters to the doors or pushed under that's what they'd do. [ Reply | More ]

Your offer is pretty good. You should stick to your guns. Plus you need to leave yourself room to give her a raise at the year mark. She is probably just seeing how much she can get out of you. Not that she's a bad person for doing that, but yeah it's a little off putting. But for her, this is her job. [ Reply | More ]

i totally agree about the raise. that's partly why the $600 is just too much. no room for annual raise, 2nd kid, etc ... id like to think she is just testing us to see what she can get, and i realize we all have to make a living. i feel like she really wants us to give in on the cleaning $$, and im nervous about that. we already pay the money out, so im not opposed, but i just want to make sure things get done and that it doesn't take away from her time with our son. ugh! this nanny thing is so soooo frustrating! sorry, a few more Q's. you are being so helpful and i really really appreciate it. so i work for a non for profit and i get off just about every holiday imaginable, and im willing to give her 95% of those days off, paid of course, and also the time btw xmas and new years. all the days total about 16 days, plus my husband and i are often on vacation for at least 2 weeks during the year (which of course we pay). so she will end up with aobut 4-5, maybe 6 weeks total of paid days off. do i still need to give her more vacation on top of that??? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.17.08, 02:07 PM Flag

Well, I would not count paid holidays as "vacation days." Also, you need to agree on the specific holidays that she'll get so that there's no misunderstanding about a holiday like Veterans Day or Columbus Day (both of which are federal holidays but not observed by a lot of corporations). Somehow, you need to give her some flexibility for scheduling her own vacation time. Not much, but it's not very fair to totally dictate her vacation time based on your family's schedule. i have heard nothing of the sort. I don't think it is correct that the reason they went to one class is because there is only one G&T class graduating. the current 4th grade is the first grade in years to have 2 classes. when they were in K, all the other grades had only one G&T class. When they went to 2 G&T classes, they went down to 1 gen ed. two years ago, with the elimination of catchment and sib preference, they had to add another gen ed class. the school, with A in the building, doesn't have the room to sustain 4 classes per grade. since they believe they will still have 2 gen eds, there is only enough room for one G&T. Two years ago they had Mandarin. That teacher left and they were not able to find a certified language teacher for Mandarin. (They said alternatives pay so much better it is hard to get a teacher for DOE salary.) There was talk a little while ago that they may have a Mandarin option for next year. A flyer came home suggesting this. I actually think Spanish is a better choice -- how many NEST kids have any chance at reinforcement of Mandarin outside of that one class? -- but I doubt I am in the majority of NEST lower school parents on this one. yeah, if you take that book with a grain of salt, it's useful and well organized. just realized that it'll freak you out if you think it's all worth thinking about [ Reply | More ]

Yes, if you're giving as a gift probably the nicest thing would be to give WTE and use a razor to cut out the "when something goes wrong" and "When your baby dies" sections.I never understood why they had that section since, I'm guessing, if your baby dies you're a little beyond turning to WTE for advice. I think with any book you have to read them and then take & leave what works for you & your lifestyle. I'd hope most moms that care enough to buy a book on pg are interested in having the healthiest pg and db possible so you'll make good choices from all the info out there. Congrats on your pg & good luck! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] car seat question. if the child is over 4years and 40 pounds, they need a booster seat, correct? do they need a five point harness with the booster? if not, do you put the chest strap in front or behind them? b/c the chest strap lies right by their necks, even with the booster. so i put it behind them but was told by a very smart-alecky 4yo that it has to go in front. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I kept my dd in a convertible carseat (the Marathon) until she was almost 5 (but she was under 40 pounds...I only switched her to the booster because she was getting too tall for the carseat). In the booster the seat belt goes in front of them. We have a booster with a back (Graco TurboBooster, I think) and the head support part has a built-in belt positioner. We also have the backless seat, and that has a little strap thing that is supposed to position the shoulder/chest belt to keep it on the shoulder and not in front of the neck, but it doesn't really seem to work well for us. A booster with a back (that will properly position the shoulder belt) is fine. A booster with no back is for older/taller DCs. It doesn't need to be a 5 point. [ Reply | More ]

A 5-point harness is the safest. The new Britax Frontier is a combo 5-point harness and booster. [ Reply | More ]
