new mom heading back to work in 1 month. offered to pay our now PT nanny $500 for 4 days/week, approx. 40 hours. DS is 6 mos. at first she seemed fine with this arrangment, and now she is all of sudden asking for $600/week. kind of put off by this. would you stick to your guns or meet her in the middle? i should also mention that she will get almost 4-5 weeks of paid vacation time. thoughts? op: i think so too. i just want to make sure im not crazy. i was really shocked when she came back with that. she has been working PT for us for a few months and i really love her and she is great with our son, but i dont think we should have to start off paying $600, just way too much! what do you think is reasonable? how did you find her in the first place? If she was your baby nurse, don't hire her. [ Reply | More ]

i have a question. in addition to the $575 salary, what do you do as far as metrocard, meals, vacation time, etc ... [ Reply | More ]

OR: no metrocard, always enough food in the house to make a sandwich, two weeks vacation (plus if we are away, we pay) plus certain days....ie Memorial Day, etc. Liberal with reimbursing expenses (ie, every few weeks, treating a few nannies from to lunch during a playgroup at our house (chinese take-out). After hours, $15 for babysitting, plus cab fare and dinner for working after 8pm. [ Reply | More ]

op: she also knows that we pay our cleaning people $60 every 2 weeks, and she said she would do all that for us if we give the $$ to her, which adds in $30/week [$530] which im not opposed to doing. i told her that means REAL cleaning, not tidying up, scrubbing bathroom, vacuuming, blinds, fridge, etc ... she said she would do it while DS is sleeping. which is certainly possible, but im worried that it won't all get done bc i know what its like taking care of him and i can barely shower sometimes. am thinking of doing it on a trial basis. thoughts? separate cleaning at this age is better. [ Reply | More ]

I think you should help her find a job for the 5th day so that her total pay is at least $600. She is probably thinking about the total she needs to make and worried that she won't be able to find a one day job (btw, in the past I never had any trouble finding a one day job for my nanny). np: I'd say no to the cleaning. If it were possible, you'd be doing it now, esp w/pt nanny, right? [ Reply | More ]

Your offer is pretty good. You should stick to your guns. Plus you need to leave yourself room to give her a raise at the year mark. She is probably just seeing how much she can get out of you. Not that she's a bad person for doing that, but yeah it's a little off putting. But for her, this is her job. [ Reply | More ]

i totally agree about the raise. that's partly why the $600 is just too much. no room for annual raise, 2nd kid, etc ... id like to think she is just testing us to see what she can get, and i realize we all have to make a living. i feel like she really wants us to give in on the cleaning $$, and im nervous about that. we already pay the money out, so im not opposed, but i just want to make sure things get done and that it doesn't take away from her time with our son. ugh! this nanny thing is so soooo frustrating! sorry, a few more Q's. you are being so helpful and i really really appreciate it. so i work for a non for profit and i get off just about every holiday imaginable, and im willing to give her 95% of those days off, paid of course, and also the time btw xmas and new years. all the days total about 16 days, plus my husband and i are often on vacation for at least 2 weeks during the year (which of course we pay). so she will end up with aobut 4-5, maybe 6 weeks total of paid days off. do i still need to give her more vacation on top of that??? Well, I would not count paid holidays as "vacation days." Also, you need to agree on the specific holidays that she'll get so that there's no misunderstanding about a holiday like Veterans Day or Columbus Day (both of which are federal holidays but not observed by a lot of corporations). Somehow, you need to give her some flexibility for scheduling her own vacation time. Not much, but it's not very fair to totally dictate her vacation time based on your family's schedule.
