[ - ] I don't know why I'm saying this on UB, but I prepped my dd with tutoring, KTSS, and other test related material to make sure she did well. She scored 98. When other parents ask me what we did, I tell them we didn't prep her at all because we live in an insanely competitive community. I'm not going to tell you where we're going because you'll get jeolous. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] bklyn moms: if you could choose, would you send dc to: a) K-12 private that you love that is in bklyn, b) a public K-5 that you also like a lot, that is in manhattan, c) a brand new private K-5 that has great potential (and costs 1/2 of other private schools) and is also in bklyn. note school a and c are still a commute from where we are in bklyn. (option d would be mediocre but decent public K-5 in our neighborhood). wwyd? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

That is not bad at all. Are you close to the subway stop? Public school is free, so I'm tempted to go with that one even if it is in Manhattan. Is it NEST or like school? If money is no issue, option a. [ Reply | More ]

pretty close to subway, but dreading commute into city every day twice (we work in bklyn, too). school is one of the EV progressive public schools. also i don't love the idea of dc in manhattan and we're across the river, if there were any emergency situation. but it is free, and we like the school. Then, I would choose the public in Manhattan and use a private van service (door to door) which is not cheap but you save on tuition so you can afford it. When your dc is old enough, he can take the subway himself. [ Reply | More ]

Definitely NOT d) unfortunately if it's not good. But it depends. If my dc were a very normal kid, I probably would but if dc needs more (accelerated or smarter peer group), that would affect my decision. [ Reply | More ]

it's an *ok* school, but teachers are kinda old and scary. the school itself is quite formal/rigid, compared w/ the other options, which i prefer b/c they are progressive. the lack of commute is so tempting, but i just don't love the school like i do the others. [ Reply | More ]

You're right. It was caled the slacker generation for years. The whole concept of "x" was nothing could stick to this generation when we were first being described b/c we 1) didn't want to go corporate america for 20 yrs after we graduated 2) would rather take odd jobs (Starbucks, anyone) until we found the right job 3) we wanted the anti-corporate, tech bubble, telecommute, casual Friday, team aproach world and generations before couldn't decide what to call it...therefore "slacker" and "x". I believe the Y generation sees the excesses and thinks they have to have biger and better now. They need designer labels, luxury vacation, club memberships etc. now and are willing to live in the hole for it. Some will be fine, but lots will get caught in the gap. [ Reply | More ]
