gifted and talented. public schools are required to have special classes for the kids who fall into this category....the kids are considered special needs. in NYC, people have to test into the classrooms and it gets really insane (especially this year) since parents teach the kids about the test and prep them. believe me, it's good reason to leave NYC! [ - ] Just to put some of these test scores in perspective, my ds took the OLSATS last year AND this year. Last year he scored in the top % and this year he scored average. Which one is the right result? People tell you over and over again that these tests aren't an adequate way to measure a child's possibilities or intelligence. But unless you test your kid TWICE with very different results each time, it may not hit home for you. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

the point is that a test that is relied on by DOE for assessing giftedness and awarding placements in G&T SHOULD NOT produce drastically different results (i.e. beyond the standard range of +-10%) in the same child. OP's kid did not go from being "gifted" to being "average" -- if the test says that there is something wrong with the test. [ Reply | More ]

Reliability doesn't mean there's zero error. There will always be error. And I'm sorry if you're offended by my tone, but I'm really fed up with the level of cluelessness I see here. It wouldn't be so bad if people who don't understand stats and psychometrics simply posted as if they don't understand it. Just because you use the words "stats" and "psychometrics" doesn't prove your point. I can do better. My dc did very well on OLSATs last year but wait-listed for G&T since no spots available. Tested again this year, and BOMBED the test (e.g. got about 1/3 answers right on the non-verbal part). This despite being told by the tester that dc did extremely well, and her teachers saying that dc is the most likely child to get into G&T from the class. I wrote to DOE to review the test, but doubt I will ever hear from them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I'm completely at a loss for words. I have had my heartbroken so many times this year trying to get my DD into a great school. Round 2 ding at Hunter/private school shutout/G&T shutout. It has been such an exhausting experience. The one bright thing I've been holding onto is that my gen ed school is pretty decent (though we wanted so much better for our girl) and her best friend from preschool is going there, so I've been trying to focus on DD and NOT my hurt and anger at the process. Well, find out today from DD that her friend is going to Anderson -- ANDERSON!!! I'm good friends with her mom and she never ever mentioned they were even taking the G&T test! I'm pretty sure she has said she doesn't "believe" in G&T. This is so out of the blue and random I have no idea what to think or do!!! 27 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

the curriculum is basically the same it's the way things are taught that differs. For instance in my dc traditional preK it was about work sheets, memorizing letters and numbers, sitting at her table while the teacher taught, she wasn't really allowed to question if something can be done another way. The teacher would say we learn it this way. In her progressive school the kids are participants in the learning process. They are encouraged to voice their ideas and they actually try out the ideas to see if the same outcome is reached. PPL say progressives are good for thos kids who are self starters, works well in groups, ect. YOur best bet is to tour both kinds of schools and see them in action [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like your traditional was on the more extreme side. Just like some progressives can be. The best schools encorporate a bit of both. Kids are more likely to get letter grades earlier at a traditional school than a progressive school. There may also be more tests/fewer projects as a means of assessing at a traditional school. Another difference is that traditional schools may choose text books rather than more "primary sources" for learning. I hope this helps a bit. [ Reply | More ]

Curricula (especially in social studies) can vary quite a bit between traditional and progressive schools. A traditional school is more likely to have a set group of material covered and to cover a broad range of subject matter (a so-called classical curriculum). A progressive approach may take something like the Maya or the Hudson River and spend an entire school year looking at different aspects of this subject. [ Reply | More ]

Here's something on the subject: Traditional schools believe that, by the time students graduate, they should have been exposed a certain body of information and they will all be expected to know the same facts. They will be quizzed and tested to make sure they have acquired these facts. Progressive schools believe students learn best by constructing their own knowledge. That means exposing them to a topic and then letting them investigate that topic and learn on their own, generally through lots of hands on activities or self-directed research. Traditional schools tend to cover a lot of information, while progressive schools tend to pick fewer topics and allow students to delve into them deeply. Some private schools (such as Dalton) begin with a progressive approach in the lower school and then switch to a traditional method of teaching in the upper school. “Traditional schools see their role as transmitting knowledge,” writes Clara Hemphill in her book, New York City’s Best Public High Schools. “They emphasize what teachers call `content’—dates in history, formulas in math, good grammar and spelling, knowledge of the periodic table in chemistry…Progressive schools, on the other hand, seek to give students the tools they need to gather and analyze information to weigh evidence from different sources, and to form their own opinions. These schools emphasize `process’—developing the skills needed to research a problem, rather than knowledge per se.” Progressive educators believe kids should not be “passive vessels,” simply learning what the teacher teaches them. Instead, they should be actively participating in their own education. In an ideal educational environment kids would be taught “both broad general knowledge and analytical skills,” Hemphill writes. She warns what “inadequate traditional schools treat education as a list of facts to be mastered. Inadequate progressive schools, on the other hand, encourage kids to voice their opinions—even if they haven’t read the books on which their opinions should be based. Inadequate traditional schools can be oppressive, while inadequate progressive schools can be chaotic and unchallenging.” Posted on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 10:03 by Registered CommenterHelicopter Mom | CommentsPost a Comment | EmailEmail | PrintPrint [ Reply | More ]

If you're talking about this fall, I would go Upper Lab (or the other popular choice East Side Middle School). If you're talking about in 7 years, who knows at that time. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Oh, and I have to say that I have no experience in any of those schools. I'm just picking UL over NEST now because of the longer, better track record of UL. [ Reply | More ]

The best would be Hunter but they don't accept kids until 7th grade. In D3, on the UWS, Delta is very popular. Anderson of course is but they don't accept many kids for 6th grade so it's tough to get in. There's an insideschools blogger who likes Clinton School for Writers & Artists and MAT, both for D2.
