For the most part you will find a whiter, upper middle class group of people at all the good schools. I'm in D2 and I found PS40 to be slightly diverse and PS3 the most diverse (face wise). I also think both of these schools are diverse economically too. Peter Cooper/Stuy Town helps with 40 and the fact that 3 used to be able to take children out of zone helped them [ Reply | More ]

from Wikipedia: The Brat Pack is a nickname given to a group of young actors and actresses who frequently appeared together in teen-oriented coming-of-age films in the 1980s. The movies made frequent use of adolescent archetypes, were often set in the suburbs surrounding Chicago, and focused on white, middle-class teenage angst.[1][2] The term, a play on the Rat Pack from the late 1950s, was first popularized in a 1985 New York Magazine cover story, which described a group of roughly interchangeable, but already highly successful and rich, teen stars.[3] The name, sometimes used in a pejorative sense,[4] was not known to be used by members of the group.[5] The group has been characterized by the excessive partying of core members such as Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez,[6] while their films have been described as representative of "the socially apathetic, cynical, money-possessed and ideologically barren eighties generation."[7] [ Reply | More ]

Can someone explain why there are a sizeable number of children scoring in level 3 (at grade level)? Wouldn't one expect almost all kids scoring 4s? yes, but if they are accelerated in math by one year (so 3rd graders are learning 4th grade math), and the test measures proficiency in 3rd grade math (not 4th grade) then doesn't a level 3 mean they are below grade-level in terms of the accelerated 4th grade math they are learning? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.23.08, 01:26 PM Flag

They must be, since 3 means they are at grade level for current grade. Though a high 3 means they are pretty close. Still, those are the kids that would do better without the acceleration. [ Reply | More ]

What a dumb thing to say. DC got into NEST last year for Kindergarten. There were plenty of people on the waitlist who never got in. Nest preps their kids in middle school for the state tests. Anderson doesn't do that. Also, Anderson kids in 7th grade are taking 9th grade Integrated Algebra - more important to get them ready for the Regents than silly state tests for work they did the prior year (or two) that have no bearing on their academic records. Maybe, but it's more important to ace that one for good HS placement (so student doesn't have to repeat classes) than concentrate on state tests that don't have a personal impact on the student. I think it's generous of the school to focus on what will help the student, rather than what will be used by outsiders to critique the school. [ Reply | More ]

Here's my own theory: since the drop happens from 6th to 7th grade, I think it's because the top Anderson students go to Hunter for 7th grade. I know there are many Anderson students who enter Hunter then; I'm not sure how many NEST students leave for H. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know much yet about the Everyday Math that Anderson teaches. But I do know there are different philosophies on how best to teach math. Measuring performance at 1 step along the way can only give you a snapshot in time, and the testing might favor one version of math teaching over another. As a new A parent, I guess I'm reserving judgment on this issue and would like to understand better what the philosophy is behind their math curriculum, before jumping to the conclusion that test scores necessarily mean there is something wrong with their approach.
