Anderson is supposed to be accelerated, right? This means they cover material beyond a particular grade level. Can someone explain why there are a sizeable number of children scoring in level 3 (at grade level)? Wouldn't one expect almost all kids scoring 4s? (I'm going by the post earlier with the breakdown of ELA/Math scores for Anderson, so haven't looked at NEST yet) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Just because the math is accelerated a year doesn't mean that the kids have it completely mastered. Just like in any school, in any grade, there are going to be A+, A, B+, B, etc [ Reply | More ]

yes, but if they are accelerated in math by one year (so 3rd graders are learning 4th grade math), and the test measures proficiency in 3rd grade math (not 4th grade) then doesn't a level 3 mean they are below grade-level in terms of the accelerated 4th grade math they are learning? They must be, since 3 means they are at grade level for current grade. Though a high 3 means they are pretty close. Still, those are the kids that would do better without the acceleration. [ Reply | More ]

np, those tests are designed to test minimum competency. A four should be a breeze for an A student [ Reply | More ]

How could it not be? They pick the highest scoring kids to enter to begin with, compared to vast majority of school that enroll anyone living in the catchment. [ Reply | More ]

Nest uses Singapore Math curriculum that is NOT accelerated. By middle school they have much better math scores than Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

I also want to point out that every mom and dad I've spoken to with children at NEST have told me that they're pretty sure their kids wouldn't have gotten in under the new system [ Reply | More ]

of course not. Especially last year. After what happened the year before NEST probably went down the list quite a bit in order to fill the class rooms. (and maybe begged some) [ Reply | More ]

What a dumb thing to say. DC got into NEST last year for Kindergarten. There were plenty of people on the waitlist who never got in. Last year they invited the top 250 scoring kids to come in for an onsite assessment. Out of those kids they picked 125. Believe me, everyone showed up for their onsite. [ Reply | More ]

That's not the point. Learning math in a certain way for years has more to do with math scores than miniscule differences in IQ. [ Reply | More ]

Still, this is impressive. Singapore Math is not aligned with the state tests, yet produces the highest scores. Even better than more selective school like Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

I'm taking this to mean that NEST's math curriculum is superior in that it can make a "regular" kid do well on the State test. [ Reply | More ]

Nest preps their kids in middle school for the state tests. Anderson doesn't do that. Also, Anderson kids in 7th grade are taking 9th grade Integrated Algebra - more important to get them ready for the Regents than silly state tests for work they did the prior year (or two) that have no bearing on their academic records. Maybe, but it's more important to ace that one for good HS placement (so student doesn't have to repeat classes) than concentrate on state tests that don't have a personal impact on the student. I think it's generous of the school to focus on what will help the student, rather than what will be used by outsiders to critique the school. [ Reply | More ]

Here's my own theory: since the drop happens from 6th to 7th grade, I think it's because the top Anderson students go to Hunter for 7th grade. I know there are many Anderson students who enter Hunter then; I'm not sure how many NEST students leave for H. [ Reply | More ]

But EDM is only taught at Anderson through 4th grade. In 5th grade Anderson switches to very traditional math from Prenticehall texts. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know much yet about the Everyday Math that Anderson teaches. But I do know there are different philosophies on how best to teach math. Measuring performance at 1 step along the way can only give you a snapshot in time, and the testing might favor one version of math teaching over another. As a new A parent, I guess I'm reserving judgment on this issue and would like to understand better what the philosophy is behind their math curriculum, before jumping to the conclusion that test scores necessarily mean there is something wrong with their approach. Because if you take a naturally bright dc and put it in a school with poor teachers and poor curriculum that dc will only ever get a mediocre education regardless of how intelligent he or she might be [ Reply | More ]
