We did Oasis Central Park for 2yrs before moving out of Manhattan. Dcs loved it there, and I found administration to be much better organized and better at communication than many other day camps we have used (Vanderbilt Y, Asphalt Green). Dcs are outdoors most of the time, and come home tired and dirty from playing. Lots of different activities. [ Reply | More ]

just do a search for st. john the divine on the internet and look for the act program. it's sorta like the Y. no swimming for mini act - which is up to 5 ( maybe 6 year olds), just sprinklers and stuff. and swimming for 6 and old ( they use the pool at barnard). it's an all day camp on the campus of the cathedral school at st. john the divine. How old is your DC? Mine are 5 and 7 and go to camp at a nearby private school. Six weeks total. Total cost around $650 per week per child (I think). When the kids get older we will probably opt for a camp outside the city, but for now we want to keep them close. [ Reply | More ]

Call them in Sept. for the dates when you can get the paperwork. It's first come first serve hence the early am sign up process. At least you only have to do it once if you child wants to go every year. Kids going into 1st (summer) to going into 5th. We've gone for several years and I love the high quality and the creative way they teach. [ Reply | More ]

the camp (they tell you later) has nothing to do with the school--no montessori teachers, not even the montessori materials. Just a bunch of teenage counselors, board games, and sprinklers. AVOID HILLARD! That camp is overcrowded and the owners lie about how many children are actually there. We pulled our kids out after realizing just how many kids were squished into that small space when we counted the buses--and did the math. [ Reply | More ]

We love Hillard. I have no idea how many kids they say are there, but I do know there are about 1000 kids. But the camp is not small at all. They added a new pool and a new field this year, so maybe it's different than when you were there? Did you know they have 4 separate field areas? You can only see two of them from the bus area, so maybe you didn't see the whole place? And they have 7 full size pools. It's plenty big enough for all the kids. Plus, the counselor/camper ratio is amazing. My dd's group has 12 kids with 3 counselors, and that doesn't include the counselors that run each activity, those are just the counselors that take the kids from activity to activity. And, most importantly, my dd and all her friends are soooo happy there. [ Reply | More ]

Back from Four Seasons Great Exuma. I have to say - we hated it! I'm not sure what it was, but there was a terrible vibe from the moment we landed. It wasn't up to "four seasons" par like we expected. We are used to the Carribean and the 'laid back' lifestyle - which is great, but just something about it wasn't exciting. We ended up leaving and going to Eleuthera (which is our FAVORITE island, mainly Pineapple Fields!!!). There were a ton of families with children there, and ample cabanas for shade. The menu was okay - they did offer kids menus in 2 of the 3 restaurants. I'm not sure what you look for in a vacation, but this was definitely not the place for me and dh! GOod luck! [ Reply | More ]

np: We didn't hate it but I agree it's not up to the Four Seasons standard. Service was spotty and really nothing to do outside of the resort (which was fine with us but just fyi). For the four days we stayed, it was fine, though overpriced for the level of service, amenities, etc. Very kid friendly, though -- everyone there was either pregnant or traveling with small kids. We went when it first opened and it was a lovely facility but the service was AWFUL! We ended up demanding a huge discount, which they gave us because they were so much at fault. Having said that, someone in my office went in Dec with older kids and loved it. We went to Four Seasons in Puerta Vallarta...lovely. [ Reply | More ]

The parents who are active in the PTA should get more, I mean we care about our children and about the school. So if our kids want a good teacher or the lead in the play or anything else, they should get it. The other mothers are teh ones who refuse to be involved and obviously really don't care about their children. [ Reply | More ]

if they truly cared about their children they'd find a way. Either quit their jobs or get involved parttime. We have mothers who are involved around their jobs. A child's residence is usually the same as the residence of her parent or custodial parent. If school officials have doubts about custody or your proof of New York City residence, they can investigate (a "407 Investigation") to see if you are the child's sole caretaker or if you live where you say you do. During the investigation your child has a right to continue attending school, under the provisions of Chancellor's Regulation A-101 4.1. [ Reply | More ]

If a child's parents are separated or divorced, the child attends school where the parent who has primary custody lives. If the custody is shared, the family may determine the child's official residence. [ Reply | More ]

If a parent and child live with another family or relative and do not have a lease in their own name, they may request that the leaseholder write a letter stating that they live in that apartment. The school officials may check to see if the child actually lives at the given address – and may make a home visit to see if the child has clothes and toys at that address. [ Reply | More ]

A child who is not residing with the custodial parent may be excluded from the school zoned for the area where she does live. If, for example, a student lives with her grandmother, but her father (who lives at another address) is still her parent -- meaning he is responsible for his daughter's welfare -- then his daughter does not have a right to attend the school in her grandmother's zone. Only if her father had abandoned her or was for some reason incapable of taking care of his daughter, would the grandmother's residence be the girl's residence and the place that determined her school zone. This policy was largely devised as a way to make sure that families were not letting their children move in with relatives as a way to take advantage of better schools in that zone. [ Reply | More ]

Why is the student living with others? If the sole reason for living with others is to permit the student to attend a certain school or secure a transfer from his/her current school to another school for which he/she is not eligible, then the student’s residence is not established there. VERIFICATION OF RESIDENCY A. Proof of address must be provided when enrolling a student in school. The following documents may be used as proof of residency: 1. A telephone bill, cable bill, credit card bill, medical insurance card, or driver’s license is not acceptable proof of address. Proof of address may be verified by any two of the following: a. a residential utility bill (gas or electric) in the resident’s name issued by National Grid (formerly Keyspan), Con Edison, or the Long Island Power Authority (for the Rockaways) within the prior 60 days; b. documentation or letter on letterhead from a federal, state, or local government agency, including the IRS, the City Housing Authority, Human Resources Administration, the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), or an ACS subcontractor indicating the resident’s name and address issued within the prior 60 days; c. an original lease agreement, deed or mortgage statement for the residence; d. a current property tax bill for the residence; e. a water bill for the residence; f. official payroll documentation from an employer issued within the past 60 days such as a form submitted for tax withholding purposes or a payroll receipt. A letter on the employer’s letterhead is not adequate. None of the documents listed above will suffice alone. [ Reply | More ]

Falsification and Investigation of Residency If there is a question about a student’s address or there is suspicion that a falsified address was used to register the student, the school must initiate an address verification investigation within 30 days of discovery of the problem. If it is determined that the student resides at an address that renders the student ineligible to attend his/her current school, the principal must provide the Attendance Content Expert of the ISC with the results of the investigation. OP here. Y'all need to CALM DOWN. I am in no way advocating turning someone in. I know several families who cheated their way in, and would never say anything to anyone. It's not the child's fault, and I wouldn't want to hurt the child, no matter how I feel about the parents. However, I also have connections at the DOE. And I see lots of people here speculating on what is and isn't OK. There's no point speculating when the information is clearly out there, so I posted it to be helpful. This was geared to help people make choices, really informed choices, about methods to get their child into an out of zone school. I understand that UB is a bitchy place, so I also understand why the worst possible motives were attributed to me. But that isn't the case, so get over yourself. [ Reply | More ]
