The amount of money and energy it takes to build your new Prius is greater than what the Prius saves. Granted, if you are buying a new car either way, get a hybrid (or some other greener option -- hybrids are not always a huge saver) but replacing every used car with a brand new Prius would be very harmful to the environment. Maybe safety? My prius is a bit on the light side and maybe the steel is not that hefty ... the tiniest brush against a parking garage column dented it to the tune of a $600 repair; also maybe if you drive it mainly in the city and don't put many miles on it. [ Reply | More ]

When he is discharged will he be stabilized on meds? I would start applying for disability and look for a residential program unless she wants him living at home w/ her full time. He probably will not be able to work or go to school for a while but he should get into some full-time program asap. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.08.08, 10:16 AM Flag

He will be stabilized. He's on disability. Residential programs have 2 yr. waiting lists--he's already on list. She needs the social worker to tell her what programs are available but he is unwilling to do his job. Alternatively, she needs the dr. to give an "axis 1" diagnosis to get into programs she knows about. No one seems to be willing to actually help her find a long-term solution. [ Reply | More ]

"atypical psychosis" is kind of a catchall diagnosis when someone is exhibiting symptoms that indicate a lack of connection with reality and distorted cognitions that do not fall within or fully meet another diagnosis. it's not a very helpful diagnosis for your cousin in terms of helping her understand prognosis. ita with pp that they need to provide her with some resources (it's called "aftercare" or "discharge" planning) and she needs to assert that she will not accept him into her care without these resources in place. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I'll tell her. The SW said certain programs are only available if he's homeless, but even the homeless shelters have waiting lists, so what is she supposed to do? Have him sleep on a park bench? [ Reply | More ]

if she's not prepared to take him back in her home (especially if due to potential danger to herself, others or him), she should tell the social worker that he needs to pursue the homeless programs because he is in reality without a home. also, for her support, she might want to check out national alliance for mental illness (NAMI) - they can be a great resource for those who have severely mentally ill loved ones. Not worth stealing their joy/making this an issue. Something else that doesn't take up space is a gift certificate to a class (Big City Moms, 92nd St Y, Karma Kids Yoga, CMA have one-time uses... depending on your neighborhood)or for $120 or so a museum/zoo membership. [ Reply | More ]

the idea that your fantasizing that your db is ill-tempered and trying to "hit" you at 3 months of age is scar if it's true. [ Reply | More ]

but that you're worrying about him having a bad temper because he wiggles his arms and legs when he's flat on his back is really stupid. This is normal behavoir for a 3mo [ Reply | More ]

he's going to be fine. try putting the changing pad on the floor if you're nervous about this. certainly he will try to get away when he is MUCH older which is developmentally normal and not a sign of bad temper! :) [ Reply | More ]
