I'd love to find a teacher who knows how to teach kids -- I tried to teach him myself and was not very good at it. well, we've been together 17 years while many of our friends have since divorced, i think we can handle co-sleeping given the bigger problems life can throw you. i grew up co-sleeping, as did all of my siblings and cousins (well, in our culture, kids just naturally gravitate to their own beds at around 3. in our parents' culture, it's a non-issue...and even though i'm american, i still have the right to incorporate parts of my parents' culture...especially if it's harmless. it's not like circumcising a vagina, my god.) why don't you wait and see how it goes? i think A's math program serves pretty much all the students very well. as for being above grade level in reading, there is such a wide range in the lower grades, and yet the teachers still manage to keep all the kids interested. my dd entered K at A reading several grade levels ahead, and was completely engaged, that year and in subsequent years. First off, there will be a range of kids in the class...some will be WAYYY above "grade level" in an area but less remarkable in others. In reading independent reading is just that...independent and the teacher tracks what books kids have, encouraging all kids to move on at their own pace. In math, it's a bit harder to differentiate, but some teachers come up with extra challenges to keep the most advanced kids engaged. If a kid is just WAY off the charts in math, it's often up to the parents to find a way to keep the child challenged, either through tutoring or a special class or program outside of school. If the child is way ahead, the child might be bored, depending on teh child's personality; teachers do not excuse advanced children from doing work simply because the child alreaady knows how to do it. In other cities' gifted schools and also in non-gifted classrooms in other cities, children who know the work already are given independent projects. I have heard of some GTs in the past doing this - although teachers tend to resist. Anderson never does this from what I understand. I don't know about NEST. [ Reply | More ]

I love reading to my kids, but I understand wanting to have some time alone. We keep it pretty efficient and stick w/ a routine so it doesn't creep up. They get p.j.'s on and wash up (bath if needed) and then downstairs for snack & a story together. Then a race to see who can get upstairs & brush teeth first. DD (2) gets two books and a little bit of a snuggle. DS (6) gets one chapter in a longer book (right now it's Catwings). If I'm doing it by myself w/ the two of them it's about 7-7:30 and we're done. I was in love with it, too, and it is a great school. But after seeing lots of schools, I wasn't in love as much. It's really hard to know until you see lots. [ Reply | More ]

Odds are long for non-sibling applicants. You may also want to look at some of the Episcopal schools that end in 8th grade (St. Hilda's St. Hugh's, Cathedral, Grace, St. Luke's). There's an observation of a Trinity child interview for K in the book The Overachievers, by the way. [ Reply | More ]

Huh? It's true. Got into multiple tts, but didn't get an interview at Trinity. Dc is happy at fc, by the way. [ Reply | More ]

BTW, we didn't FC Trinity. That might have something to do with it, but we felt it wasn't the right school for dd. [ Reply | More ]

Us too - although DH had business collegue connection. Asked us straight up if it was our FC. Seemed only willing to go to bat for us if it was. At the time friend asked, we couldn't honestly say yes. WL'd also. [ Reply | More ]

Slim to none. We had a great connection, but didn't commit to FC and didn't get in. 99 ERB. [ Reply | More ]
