[ - ] I really want to get the class lists from Anderson. Most of dc's friends from preschool are away on vacation and this would be a great time to get together with some new classmates and hopefully make some friends. Anyone else waiting for class list from your dc school? I know there will be flamers, but I think setting up playdates now is a GREAT idea to get them ready for September. 59 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np: We are also waiting for the A lists. I think playdates are a good idea. There is even a mom with a dd who I met at the "picnic" who I think seemed to get along with my dd and I plan to shoot her an email when I get the list. Nevertheless, fwiw, there are so many Anderson haters on here these days that these kind of posts will generate snarky responses. If you try to schedule play dates when you get the list with people nearby, or others, I'd think you'd get a nice response. Nevertheless, there's probably no rush as a lot of people are busy in the summer with various activities, vacations, etc. [ Reply | More ]

. . . and they only reason I think this is more important for a school like A is that a lot of these kids will know nobody the first day they arrive. IN local schools, a child often knows at least one person prior to arrival at the school. I think seeing a familiar face will make the whole K process a little less scary - even if my dd never plays with that summer play date kid again. After the summer, the playdate scheduling is 100% up to dd. [ Reply | More ]

so, the kids won't know anyone -- it's really not a big deal at all -- they'll all be in the same boat. i would use the summer months to stay connected with dc's friends from preschool, which will give your dc assurances that even though her friends are going to different schools, they can still see their old friends. btw, i am a current anderson parent. all the kids managed to make friends with their classmates the first week or two of school -- which is what happens at most schools, even neighborhood ones. Honestly, if my kid doesn't know anyone, she will totally survive. If she knows a kid or two before school, I think it would be great. Also, meeting a new kid or two who will be in your new K class in no way replaces the endless playdates with old friends. I'm not sure what the debate is exactly. [ Reply | More ]

When you called, did you talk to the doctor? doctor's office? The key is how it has been coded- the insurance pays their portion based on that. It's possible that it's been coded incorrectly. And if it hasn't, you can express your dismay to the doctor I suppose, so that he's more clear in future when talking to patients about what's involved. [ Reply | More ]

let me just warn you: i took my dd and her friends to the american girl movie for her 8th bday party. i was shocked at how many mothers considered this a mother/daughter bonding experience and crashed the party - one with her 11 y .o. son. and two moms even talked to me as if i was ruining something by making it be my dd's party. so, just know if your dd's friends' moms are as crazy as my dd's were, it may not be fun for you. It's a fantastic opportunity for your kids to learn a new language and culture, but they'll need a lot of support because they'll feel like outsiders for quite a while. I have one dc who was born here. It breaks my heart on a daily basis that he can't see my parents more often. Other than that I enjoy living here, but I would rather have my children educated in the States although we're not there yet - he's too young. I think that the posters who say "go go go" can't have experience living abroad - if they did their responses would probably be more balanced. I wouldn't say not to do it -- it might overall be the best thing for your family in the end -- just think carefully about it and don't underestimate some of the tradeoffs you might have to make. On the other hand, some families who have lived abroad will not express the same hesitations that I am. Good luck whatever you decide. [ Reply | More ]

Below responder here: The teachers do not talk to the tester about the children. The tester also says nothing to the teachers after the test. Part of the rules. [ Reply | More ]

And you don't think the rules get broken if the tester has a long-standing relationship with the school? [ Reply | More ]

No. I think they are pretty strict about it. ANd that the tester could lose her job if she is found out. [ Reply | More ]

The school wouldn't rat on her if she has a relationship with them. Please. [ Reply | More ]

You have bigger issues if this is a concern. [ Reply | More ]

Very rare that a tester goes to the same school for more then a year. Testers get in and get out. [ Reply | More ]

Nope, I think you're not being paranoid. If this is at all a concern you should do it at the office. [ Reply | More ]

That's what I thought. Also heard that a high office score is considered a more accurate reflection of kid's abilities (as child didn't know tester and wasn't coddled with breaks or multi-session test). My dd aced test at office and did very well in ongoing process. [ Reply | More ]

I think you are better off having dc take it at school. If he is having an off day or didn't get enough sleep the night before the teachers will recognize that and have him tested another day. He will be more comfortable at school. Even if your dc has no separation issues what if there are other children at the ERB office who come out crying? Could throw him off. [ Reply | More ]

I have had 2 dcs take the ERB at preschool & 2 dcs take it at the office & I would say hands down it is better in the school. Obviously you don't know if you dc will have separation issues but if they do at the office you have no choice but to go home & scheduel for another time, & now your dc associates the test w/fear & crying. Why take that chance? In the school setting the teacher has the latitude to choose which child gets tested & in what order - if she is good, she sends off the strong kids first who come back & report how the "nice lady gave them a sticker" & after that all the kids, even the shy ones, are thrilled to go off & have their "special time". The teacher can also see if a child is coming down with a cold or is overtired & not send them for the test on that day. Overall, a no brainer, take it in the school. [ Reply | More ]

LOL. HARDLY a "no-brainer". If a dc loves school and is the type to rush to finish so as not to miss out on something in class, it's a much better idea to take kid to office. Also, you know the date ahead of time and can ensure a good night's sleep and good breakfast. Totally depends on the kid. Shy kids or those who could take or leave school might be better tested at school, but kids like my dc should be tested at office, imo. [ Reply | More ]

Where were you early when one mom was claiming that it cannot possibly be that any dc could do better at the office? ITA with you, mine would have taken about five minutes if we had had him take it at the school [ Reply | More ]

I think it really depends on your kid. I had my DD take it at preschool; she's shy and reticent with strangers so I thought the familiarity of the school would be good for her (she got a 99/97/98, so I guess it worked). I'm going to have my DS take it at the center; he's outgoing and not at all shy (but I am worried he'd rush at school if the class was doing something he didn't want to miss). [ Reply | More ]

Mine got 99/99/99 (really) at the office. Totally depends on the kid (as you point out). Don't know that my dd would have broken 90 at school. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. Dd took it at the office and got 99. Someone asked score and location a while back and several posters posted high scores and ERB office. [ Reply | More ]
