I know I will be flamed, but in a G&T or citywide, how do teachers work with dc's that are above grade level in reading and math. Give them extra work throughout the day? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

But what if a child needs more challenging math - beyond one year acceleration? [ Reply | More ]

why don't you wait and see how it goes? i think A's math program serves pretty much all the students very well. as for being above grade level in reading, there is such a wide range in the lower grades, and yet the teachers still manage to keep all the kids interested. my dd entered K at A reading several grade levels ahead, and was completely engaged, that year and in subsequent years. First off, there will be a range of kids in the class...some will be WAYYY above "grade level" in an area but less remarkable in others. In reading independent reading is just that...independent and the teacher tracks what books kids have, encouraging all kids to move on at their own pace. In math, it's a bit harder to differentiate, but some teachers come up with extra challenges to keep the most advanced kids engaged. If a kid is just WAY off the charts in math, it's often up to the parents to find a way to keep the child challenged, either through tutoring or a special class or program outside of school. If the child is way ahead, the child might be bored, depending on teh child's personality; teachers do not excuse advanced children from doing work simply because the child alreaady knows how to do it. In other cities' gifted schools and also in non-gifted classrooms in other cities, children who know the work already are given independent projects. I have heard of some GTs in the past doing this - although teachers tend to resist. Anderson never does this from what I understand. I don't know about NEST. [ Reply | More ]
