[ - ] At a really low point in my life. 36, mom of 2 (5 and 2 yrs.) FT WOHM with a job I love but that is so stressful it threatens to drag me down...lots of travel and long hours. DH is SAHD/freelancer and we have a PT babysitter, but things feel hard lately. We need my income and I am struggling with health problems (recent bout of kidnet stones that led to a hospitalization, and now having problems with alcohol.) I was sober for over a year, in AA, then dropped out but didn't have problems with my drinking until last weekend, when after a long work trip i felt out of control and drank two bottles of vodka in 3 1/2 days. I managed to detox myself and get back on track but after a horrible day at work I relapsed with wine last night. I feel so sad and tired...like a terrible mom and wife. I know I need to go back to AA, or some kind of treatment and just get myself together but I can't seem to find the strength right now. I just wish I could be a good mom like the ones I see all around me in the playgrounds, or at my son's school...instead of living with all these awful secrets. Sorry for venting here, I just needed to let this out. Any moms on who can relate, or with any advice? Thanks for listening. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Thanks everyone. I am going to dig up my NY intergroup list and find a meeting asap. My dh is supportive but he has his own problems, especially since he lost his FT job last fall. This is my first time back on UB since last year, it' snice to know there are still some understanding moms on here. And poster above is right, 2 bottles of vodka in 3 days was an awful thing. I'm determined not to go back there...I'm a little nervous that I may need to seek some medical treatment though, have been reading about seizures, etc. from stopping drinking "cold turkey" although I did it before...does anyone know if I could be in real danger? I won't be able to see my dr. tomorrow and definitely need to be back at work on monday. I'm sober now but still feel pretty shaky. Thanks again. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson is a gifted (G&T) K-8 public school on the UWS (Columbus & 84th). It's probably on par with Hunter for those grades but many (including us) preferred Hunter because it goes through 12th grade and is not under the DOE. Anderson is under the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

It sounds like you're able to produce the tuition; The bigger questions relate to your long term educational and other quality of life goals for your child and family. At a 30k mean average (increasing nearly annually), privates are a big chunk of cash. Will you be able to save for college, have a life enriched by travel and other broadening experiences, be able to maintain a cushion in case of need? It's a lot to think about for a family and the fray of admissions-both private AND public- has become enough to send many scrambling to accept any private spot-at any immediate cost. [ Reply | More ]

of course you can. your after tax income is around $135k, after housing costs you still have $123K. Tuition will set you back to $90K, which is $7500/month to spend. Given that you decided to forgo a large income to work at a not-for-profit, I will assume you don't live an extravagant life style, so I'm sure you can manage with one child on even a lot less than $7500/month. yes, we could move. We live in manhattan and may need to move. But right now, we're looking for less drastic changes while DH goes through a rough patch at work. [ Reply | More ]

have you taken 2 months and written down and/or kept track of every single purchase? That can be illuminating. We always realize we need to cut back on eating out and $60 ATM withdrawals (the money just disappears). [ Reply | More ]

yes, we don't use the atm at all (i withdraw 200 a month for cash expenses, the rest we put on one card which we pay every month in full.) [ Reply | More ]

groceries seem high for 4 of you (unless you have more kids). we spend about 500-600 for 4 of us (and I buy organic, etc). where does the 200 for cash expenses go? [ Reply | More ]

for books, starbucks (occasionally-i just quit coffee so this will go down), pizza when we're out with the boys without snacks or lunch, subway rides. [ Reply | More ]

honestly, I'd look at those expenses. library instead of buying books-we use our local library more than buying books. between 4 of us, we go through like 40-50 books a wk (I do have a toddler, and some of these are board books, but if you think of that financially...) [ Reply | More ]

thank you! i will definitely be more careful with that. We're thinking of pulling my youngest from preschool to save money. I am a sahm so I could do that, but we love the school and it's only 3 days. [ Reply | More ]

Should be okay if you are able to structure in regular play dates, read to 3yo, do activities, etc. It's a hard job. [ Reply | More ]

I know LOL. Especially as I homeschool my older one. We do do lots of activities where younger kids are around, so I do think playdates won't be impossible. [ Reply | More ]

I have an opposite spin. I would put both kids in school, transfer every other babysitting week money towards childcare costs, and do something where you can get health insurance fo rthe family. I actually think your rent for NYC-metro area is reasonable, you don't seem to mention a car, and your groceries aren't so, so bad considering you would have to probably buy worse quality, more fattening/less healthy food for your family. one kid is homeschooled (our older one) and the other is in preschool which technically isn't neccesary (we love the school and have strong ties to it). So maybe keep them both home? I don't have a job, well of course, i homeschool but I don't make money from that! [ Reply | More ]

OP. What I am actually saying may not fit with your educational philosophy, so you have to weigh things up, but economically speaking if you are not saving, you can't afford to home school. Put #1 in school, keep #2 in school, get a sitter a few more hours for #2, get a job that pays insurance and your golden. [ Reply | More ]

Don't dry your clothes, just hang them up on the shower rod. No cable. Check the phone - you could probably save money there. Videos and books from library only. No newspaper or mag subscriptions. NO Starbucks. Walk everywhere you can. Or share a monthly metro card. Cook at home. [ Reply | More ]
