What is Anderson, where is it located and is it sort of like a less good Hunter? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Anderson is a gifted (G&T) K-8 public school on the UWS (Columbus & 84th). It's probably on par with Hunter for those grades but many (including us) preferred Hunter because it goes through 12th grade and is not under the DOE. Anderson is under the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Both schools are around the same size - 2 classes per grade, 24 kids per class for Hunter for K-6, 25-28 kids per class for Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Also, Anderson shares its building with PS 9 and Hunter, both the elementary and the HS, is in its own building. [ Reply | More ]

this was why we didn't even try for Anderson - I didn't want my kid to be subject to "us and them" especially since color would seem to be a very obvious part [ Reply | More ]

does anderson increase in class size later, or does in stay 28 per class through 8th grade? does that get stifling socially? [ Reply | More ]

The DOE took over Anderson, which completely changed the selection process, so time will only tell if it remains comparable to Hunter or will become like other local G&T schools. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson has always been a DOE school of course, though it had had autonomy over its admissions process until this year. [ Reply | More ]

I just meant it was never a non-DOE school or program. Even before becoming its own school, it was a part of ps9 [ Reply | More ]

I think the new selection process will have little or no effect on the school. [ Reply | More ]

ditto. hunter and previously, anderson balanced for gender, diversity, personality, birthdays, etc. hardly made the kids smarter. the loss of the onsite may result in les balancing in the various ways, but the kids will always be smart...as smart as hunter or other kids at other good schools. plus, the curriculum is great and the school has lots of support. Also, Wikipedia actually has an interesting page on Anderson. It describes the school's history very well. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter K-6 is progressive and more creative. Anderson's principal is a DOE manager. Hunter, after many tries and misses, has a great new principal. Anderson has test prep and curriculum oriented towards the state wide tests. Hunter has no test prep and curriculum is not affected by the state wide tests. [ Reply | More ]
