Don't know why she is leaving..I know that is the next question someone will ask. I just know that despite the long waits to see her, I will miss her terribly...some people flame her here but the bottom line is even if you don't love her personally (which I actually do), she is the strongest advocate for the patient I have ever ever met and a wonderful doctor. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

DH is bipolar, takes meds, but this always worried me and has caused me great anxiety (has had 4 jobs in 7 years), but no "episodes." So now, I have a baby, he went off meds and had a crazy episode so bad I had to go to my parents house b/c he wouldnt get help. I filed for divorce, he is now getting help and I am freaking out. I left the same situation. I was scared for my life, one day he just decided he was better and didn't need meds. The only really scary thing is if he gets joint custody and you have to leave your kids with him every other weekend and you don't know what he's going to do. It's tough. Good Luck. My advice, leave, it probably won't get better. [ Reply | More ]

have you ever thought about trying to adjust your attitude? If you were looking for "a catch", you weren't really seeing him as a person. Now that you decided he isn't such a bargain, you hate him. I think you should look at yourself here. A DH can't make you happy. You have to do that. If you leave, you will find another "catch". Maybe it will last and maybe not. Probably not. I used to feel that way until I knew someone who had a Downs kid. You can't tell how affected the child is until they are born. This one was profoundly disabled, had multiple, life-threatening surgeries to correct heart defects, and was still in a diaper at age 7. I know his parents loved and treasured him, but it's not like he was a little less than perfect. He was his mother's full-time job. Not everyone is willing or able to do that. [ Reply | More ]

I think it would be especially hard to find affordable care for DS child in NYC, so that's probably a major facotr in not seeing DS in NYC. I never heard of 90% termination rate, a lot of women don't even have the CVS or amnio to begin with. I think in NYC the abortion rate is high, for the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy the Russian nurse would say to me "So you want to keep the baby right? I switched doctors. [ Reply | More ]

i knew of a downs family when i lived in san francisco (i worked with the dh). my coworker said that his wife and he were deeply religious, and they opted out of the amnio even though she was 42 when they had their dd. that being said, i personally didn't have an amnio when i concieved my identical twins. when later sonograms indicated a potential soft marker for downs, i did some research and found out that most downs babies are born to women under 35. because most mothers over 35 are tested and terminate. a sad statistic, but my kids are not special needs so i can't judge. A person with Downs has an elevated risk of serious physical/medical problems. And despite the great programs that enable many Downs people to live independently, many others are not able to do so. This is a different kind of burden for an entire family. [ Reply | More ]

One of my favorites too! I'm a pretty avid reader (when I have the time) and have a list of novels I'd like to read but I don't have anything by O'Hara or West on my list. Can you suggest a novel or two by each of them or any other author you like? Oh, another really great novel (but two long for the beach) is The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald. It made me want to jump in the book and help the characters out at times and also made me so thankful that I wasn't in their situations at other times - great book but quite disturbing! Appointment in Samarra is John O'Hara's greatest book. I just finished 10 North Frederick, and liked that too. For Dorothy West, start with The Wedding, her masterpiece, edited and brought to the market by Jackie Onassis. She also has books of short stories which are really really good. They tell about life from the viewpoint of an upscale African American woman. Fascinating. [ Reply | More ]
