anyone know a family who had a DC with down syndrome? heard that 90% of down pregnancies are terminated. i've never seen a downs child in NYC, so am thinking that its 100% here. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I find that really sad. Yes, I know a few people with DS children. Not in NYC though. I think it's sad that someone would terminate their own child because he/she was not perfect [ Reply | More ]

you can't judge others by your standards -- raising a disabled dc is a lifetime (and beyond) commitment [ Reply | More ]

why not? I can have an opinion. Besides, I said it made me sad, not that I thought they were horrible people. There is a differenc you know. And it does make me sad [ Reply | More ]

raising any child is a commitment...if you google down syndrome blogs you will note that many families report that raising a child with down syndrome has many rewards. [ Reply | More ]

If you are up to the challenge that's great but why do you fault others that feel differently? [ Reply | More ]

again, every child is a challenge...there is no faulting others, every parent makes a decision for their family. Why do you find fault with people who decide to raise their children? [ Reply | More ]

I used to feel that way until I knew someone who had a Downs kid. You can't tell how affected the child is until they are born. This one was profoundly disabled, had multiple, life-threatening surgeries to correct heart defects, and was still in a diaper at age 7. I know his parents loved and treasured him, but it's not like he was a little less than perfect. He was his mother's full-time job. Not everyone is willing or able to do that. [ Reply | More ]

I think it would be especially hard to find affordable care for DS child in NYC, so that's probably a major facotr in not seeing DS in NYC. I never heard of 90% termination rate, a lot of women don't even have the CVS or amnio to begin with. I think in NYC the abortion rate is high, for the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy the Russian nurse would say to me "So you want to keep the baby right? I switched doctors. [ Reply | More ]

I don't personally know anybody w/a downs child, but I see groups of them being taken on field trips to to & from school fairly regularly here in the city - all high school age or adults now that I think about it. Wonder where the little ones are? [ Reply | More ]

I work in a perinatal center-and I have certainly seen a number of families where they received a diagnosis of Down syndrome and continued the pregnancy. But overall the termination rate is pretty high. [ Reply | More ]

i knew of a downs family when i lived in san francisco (i worked with the dh). my coworker said that his wife and he were deeply religious, and they opted out of the amnio even though she was 42 when they had their dd. that being said, i personally didn't have an amnio when i concieved my identical twins. when later sonograms indicated a potential soft marker for downs, i did some research and found out that most downs babies are born to women under 35. because most mothers over 35 are tested and terminate. a sad statistic, but my kids are not special needs so i can't judge. A person with Downs has an elevated risk of serious physical/medical problems. And despite the great programs that enable many Downs people to live independently, many others are not able to do so. This is a different kind of burden for an entire family. [ Reply | More ]
