[ - ] the real problem is there are far too many ultra high ERB and SB scores in the 4 yo set. Some of these kids will still look brilliant at age 14 but many will look closer to avg. These tests are normed on groups of preschool children who do not have all the advantages of your typical NYC child of educated parents. Some of the kids are just advanced, and more simply advanced than genuinely highly intelligent. So there is an over-supply of high ERB and high SB kids in the city. The supply of very high testing kids is smaller after age 10. At that point all the kids who were only advanced (mainly for environmental reasons) are now testing closer to their actual ability level. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

absolutely. I had this very discussion with a psychologist who gives the SB for hunter. NYC kids scores are artificially inflated at this age compared to national norms. They are more likely to have years of preschool, exposed to more learning opportunities, be more verbal earlier. Things even out down the road, although not completely. Some geographical areas in the US have higher IQ scores. [ Reply | More ]

Ability level has only loose correlation with IQ though. Plenty of hard working kids with above average but not profoundly gifted IQ will become stellar students, while a good number of kids with higher IQ will be left out in the sand. Great test taker and i expect her SAT scores will be great. Really good writer. But no legacy and no connections and can't donate big bucks to her TT. So .. will TT get her placed at an Ivy? Or would she do just as well if she went to Stuyvesant? I"ve read and heard that if there's a kid whose parents are prominent or legacies and a kid whose parents are nobodies, and both kids have good qualifications, the school will push the kid with the monied legacy parents, and the other kid they'll direct to a good but lesser school. If that's the case, is there any advantaqe in terms of exmissions in staying at the TT? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Honestly, from any school in NYC, public or private, there's going to have to be something really special about her that will make her stand out from her other high-scoring peers. It could be something like her writing ability, it could be that she's just rocket scientist smart, it could be a real dedication and motivation to making the world a better place, it could be that her parents have major money, but I really believe that these schools are looking for that special "x factor" among a number of extremely qualified students, and that if your dd has it, it doesn't matter which of any of the good NY schools she goes to. And by the way, I also believe that the "x factor" is sometimes random chance - a great esssay or recommendation or something about that applicant that strikes the admissions officer in a particular way and makes them fall in love with that particular kid and what they could offer. I don't think there is an answer to this question. Your dd most likely will have the better chance coming from the school where she is happier--she will be more motivated, self-assured, relaxed, etc., all of which will help in the college application process. Who knows what will happen in a few years with her. I would involve her in this decision. Does she love her TT? Is she itching for different social pool, different kind of challenges, etc. I would leave exmissions out of it. Even if it's important to you, it might no work out the way you thought anyway. DH wants to send her to public for hs, presumably Stuy. He says, as one of the other posters did, that it'll be about whatever makes her special, anyway, in the end. Ivy is good for connections. I've seen this so many times in my professional life. It's not that you can't be successful w/o Ivy connections, but they seem to be really helpful. [ Reply | More ]

EXCUSE ME.. But you don't know what you are talking about. Science is enriched in all grades. The school has three science teachers dedicated to teach only science: K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. They do break up into groups and do lots and lots of experiments and go on field trips. They do ALL of the same labs as any school with a lab and more that the science teachers develop and purchase above and beyond the core curriculum (and much of the core curriculum is compacted because it stinks.) OP asked about how Anderson is enriched beyond GT. Class size and facilities and getting rid of tenured bad teachers - to a large degree - are beyond the school's control because it is a DOE school. However, the question of how Andereson is enriched beyond GT is NOT beyond the school's control. The NYS curriculum demands are extremely vague and general - they can be found online, if you want to read them and see how vague they are. So it's entirely up to the principal of Anderson and the teachers what the kids are taught. [ Reply | More ]

np: If she was 40 and her time was running out I could totally see IVF to have twins, but she is 33, had a 1 year old when she conceived again. Why on earth would she do IVF, and/want twins? [ Reply | More ]

interesting that nobody suspects that, naturally, it's IVF: Look at how underweight she was when she conceived. She probably had a "goal" in mind to have another child, became impatient when she didn't conceive right away and then sought help. That's my theory, anyway... [ Reply | More ]

ITA - i think its insane that a doctor would do IVF on her. she was way too thin when she conceived (I had to do IVF to get prego and the first thing that my RE told me to do was to gain 5 lbs to increase my chances of conceiving on my own) also most ethical REs wont even talk to you about IVF if you have been TTC for less than 6 - 12 mnths. i think her having twins is totally narcisistic. twin pregnancies are really risky - nobody ever thinks about that, just the 'glamour' of having twins. i dont mean to flame, but it annoys me. As a MOT, I see what you mean by the glamour of twins, but they are pretty commonplace these days. If it is your first pregnancy it can be an all in one deal, but otherwise an unplanned twin birth can really throw you and DH for all kinds of loops. [ Reply | More ]

I don't like the first one. The second is alright. The area around the third is really pretty and I kind of like the retro-lodge vibe or it, but I think it's tire of all that wood quickly. [ Reply | More ]

i like the "log playhouse" with the first one. second strikes me as nice but a little cookie-cutter. third has great property and right on the lake--so nice. i agree that the wood might get to be a bit much, though. [ Reply | More ]

I would not remember the names of tje actual camp site, but I believe the towns were like Seaside Heights, Wildwood, they are camp grounds with lots, you are in the woods, but other campers are not so far. Also Deleware. Google Camp Grounds in NY, NJ and PA...they are camp grounds no star ratings so look for the things that are important to your family. The beach ones were great though, because you have the boardwalks and kiddie amusement parks, as kid it was my favorite thing! [ Reply | More ]

^^^and to answer your question that 5 lbs is a bitch before pregnancy, I have not given birth yet so I can't say about that. But the rule of thumb is up the cardio, and add weight bearing excercise, maybe a bootcamp class or train for a 5k 10k what ever your next leel would be. [ Reply | More ]

gained about 35 total. I've lost 30 so far from sweating/bf-ing. I think that is pretty normal--15 pounds the first week and another 15 in the next month. It's what's left that I so don't want to deal with (also, I was about 5 pounds over normal weight when I got pg, so at the end of the day I'd like to lose 10-ish). [ Reply | More ]
