the real problem is there are far too many ultra high ERB and SB scores in the 4 yo set. Some of these kids will still look brilliant at age 14 but many will look closer to avg. These tests are normed on groups of preschool children who do not have all the advantages of your typical NYC child of educated parents. Some of the kids are just advanced, and more simply advanced than genuinely highly intelligent. So there is an over-supply of high ERB and high SB kids in the city. The supply of very high testing kids is smaller after age 10. At that point all the kids who were only advanced (mainly for environmental reasons) are now testing closer to their actual ability level. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

This should be obvious to everyone but I'm not sure it is. I think many people like to believe their child is exceptional. [ Reply | More ]

absolutely. I had this very discussion with a psychologist who gives the SB for hunter. NYC kids scores are artificially inflated at this age compared to national norms. They are more likely to have years of preschool, exposed to more learning opportunities, be more verbal earlier. Things even out down the road, although not completely. Some geographical areas in the US have higher IQ scores. [ Reply | More ]

Ability level has only loose correlation with IQ though. Plenty of hard working kids with above average but not profoundly gifted IQ will become stellar students, while a good number of kids with higher IQ will be left out in the sand. There is a lot more to academic performance than IQ scores. [ Reply | More ]

parents have higher income level and higher education level so greater opportunity for enrichment for dc. plus parents have a hyper-neurotic need to compete at all costs. : ) [ Reply | More ]

Well, we have higher education and income level but didn't do any early childhood enrichment... Maybe we're in the minority. Though, I don't see how having those classes and enrichment will help you with ERB. [ Reply | More ]

Success in life is heavily correlated with IQ as measured at the age of five. Whatever you as a parent can do before the age of five to increase that number will pay a rich reward according to studies [ Reply | More ]

read the book "IQ" and you will see that your reasoning is false, and that IQ at 5 is almost meaningless. The poster who wrote about a high early IQ as a measurement of privilege offers a central point. [ Reply | More ]

Just speaking to your children is advantageous for them. The statistics on the number of words heard by a child at age 4 with educated parents compared to a child from a lower economic status and uneducated parent(s) is astonishing. (np) [ Reply | More ]

it's amazing to me that schools use these tests at all. isaagny has been told by experts at assessment that the ERB shouldn't be weighted very heavily. you're exactly right that so many kids will have high scores but won't be the stellar students. [ Reply | More ]
