What is science like in the early years at Anderson? Do they break into small groups in K? or is that later? What about other subjects? how is it enriched beyond regular G&T? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It's not enriched beyond G&T, but it has a possibly higher scoring group of kids. There is no science in the early grades, after that they have what the school science in a box. They order kits ince they have no science lab. The class size is large, even in K. [ Reply | More ]

How on earth can you say it has a higher scoring group of kids? My DD got a 99 same as every other kid on this board and she didn't get into Anderson. Every single kid at ps 9 G&T this year (except maybe the 4 sibs) got a 99. Half the kids at ps 166 got a 99. most kids at NEST got a 99. Anderson isn't special in the "high scoring kid" area. K-3 has their own science teacher and has science at least 2x/week. My DC was in K this year--I'm not sure where the above poster got info. [ Reply | More ]

My understanding was that there are 3 science teachers in the lower grades K-3. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, there are 3 science teachers. One for K-3, one for grades 4-6 and one for grades 7 & 8. The K-3 teacher comes into classrooms, the upper grades use science labs. [ Reply | More ]

Esperanza Rising is read in third grade at Anderson - usually read in fifth grade elsewhere. The Phantom Tollbooth is read in first grade - probably a third grade + book elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

np: There is a huge range of books recommended at each grade level due not only to each child's academic abilites but also his or her emotional maturity. It's not always about faster, but sometimes it's about sparking a flame, just like anywhere else, only the range will be far broader on the higher end. [ Reply | More ]

EXCUSE ME.. But you don't know what you are talking about. Science is enriched in all grades. The school has three science teachers dedicated to teach only science: K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. They do break up into groups and do lots and lots of experiments and go on field trips. They do ALL of the same labs as any school with a lab and more that the science teachers develop and purchase above and beyond the core curriculum (and much of the core curriculum is compacted because it stinks.) ^^^ And btw, having one less transition of moving young children to a separate room for the benefit of being in a lab (that usual has the wrong sized furniture for them also, even in private schools) is a good thing; not a negative. [ Reply | More ]

I know the space thing is not their fault but really - PS87 has a separate lab room with furniture sized for children and it is a good thing! Generally, extra rooms for music, computers, etc. are considered a good thing. Do these students have trouble w/transitioning? [ Reply | More ]

No one is saying PS87 is superior to Anderson - but not everything is best at Anderson as some posters would have you believe. And to put a positive spin on lack of space is silly to me. [ Reply | More ]

funny that those things make a curriculum "enriched". Sad state of the public school system. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that those are the things that make a curriculum enriched. Those are just facts about the science program that the poster brought up. [ Reply | More ]

np: I think having a dedicated science teacher for different age groups, teaching in small groups and going beyond the usual curriculum in terms of field trips and experiments sounds highly enriched to me. nothing sounds sad in this post. I suppose you are just another bitter basher. [ Reply | More ]

Tour the school and they will answer all of your questions. They will also tell you that they are not a free private school and experience the same problems as other public schools. [ Reply | More ]

Public schools can't match private schools re: facliities; class size; ability to get rid of bad teachers. Anything beyond that which is a problem, there is no excuse for. [ Reply | More ]

OP asked about how Anderson is enriched beyond GT. Class size and facilities and getting rid of tenured bad teachers - to a large degree - are beyond the school's control because it is a DOE school. However, the question of how Andereson is enriched beyond GT is NOT beyond the school's control. The NYS curriculum demands are extremely vague and general - they can be found online, if you want to read them and see how vague they are. So it's entirely up to the principal of Anderson and the teachers what the kids are taught. [ Reply | More ]

nnp - I think the OP was asking for specifics about Anderson's enriched curriculum, not literally how it was implemented. [ Reply | More ]

I was responding to poster who said that Anderson would say that they are not a private school and can't be expected to provide what a private school offers. I was pointing out that private vs. public and DOE vs. nonDOE doesn't have anything to do with enrichment. [ Reply | More ]
