[ - ] I agreed with DH a month ago that we would do a big sleepover party for dc, if he would help me really clean up the apt. and clear out a ton of clutter. Now he is literally working around the clock, barely speaks to me on the phone or at home (always on the phone or computer) and I am starting to think he is not actually going to help me at all, so feeling overwhelmed by a rather huge task. 59 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

the huge task is clearing out all the clutter and fixing up the apt. You would agree it's necessary if you saw our place. The mess is largely caused by him. Obviously I don't want to cancel for dc's sake. [ Reply | More ]

if it's his clutter/mess, gather it all up and toss into moving boxes; stack in your bedroom before the party and keep the door closed. then you can have a clutter-free party, and he can clean his own mess whenever he gets around to it [ Reply | More ]

yes, abstract thinking actually is the source of a lot of the problem. Abstracting someone's race from their individuality and then making categorical assumptions based on that abstract quality can get you quite far off base in a hurry. By no means of course is this limited to white people thinking about black people, or even to race in general. Also goes for nationalities, religions, heights, hair colors, clothing choices on and on. [ Reply | More ]

i think trying to take a heavy hand is the right thing. some will say let them work it out, but i grew up in a fighting family where my parents didn't get involved, and i dont' think that's right. i think you need to give them consequences- don't take sides, just say, if you fight, you will each lose a privelege, and just keep taking priv. away until they figure out not to fight. My dds are slightly younger but I do get involved but not in the sense of "taking sides" or doling out punishments. I come in and ask what's going on and then ask them how we can work it out. I will suggest the older one find something to "trade" with her younger sister if they are fighting over an object. If one of them didn't respect something that the other child was seriously playing/working with, I will intervene and reinforce that they both have to be respectful of that. I help them "work it out" by helping them decide on a compromise. If they are too upset or not willing to do that then they both get "time outs" to settle down and then figure it out later when they have calmed down. [ Reply | More ]
