I insist on keeping a land line for the better connection and plus if there is no electricity it will work if you can't charge your cell phone. (Maybe I do have a bit of survivalist paranoia in me also.) Get the basic local plan - no long distance and it will run you about $20 - $25 a month. If you only have a cordless phone just buy the cheapest corded phone just to keep around and then it is available to use when there is no electricity. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Use your cell phone for long distance calls or use one of those long distance plans where you have to dial a certain number first and it will be charged through your regular bill. Plus if you dial 911 from the land line it is easy for the operator to pinpoint your location and address for a quick response. [ Reply | More ]

A substance given to cows to increase milk production, called recombinant bovine growth hormone, became a prime suspect. But Dr. Paul Kaplowitz, the author of "Early Puberty in Girls," said that the hormone, if it did make its way into milk, would have no effect. It must be injected, not digested, he said. A study published in 2001, led by Dr. Kaplowitz, showed that girls who developed sooner tended to have higher body-mass indexes. np: I'd honestly like to see a very long term, multi generational study of menarche ages. My grandmother got her period at age 9. I doubt there was race specific studies done in the 1920's or earlier of menarche. Also, you have to remember that many kids are much better nourished these days than in the past, and that can contribute to earlier menarche. It's not just obesity, it's better nutrition over all. So if early puberty is caused by obesity or greater body mass, and we are pumping cows full of growth hormones and eating their meat and drinking their milk, there is absolutely no link? I think if you looked at the diets of people in the 40's and 50's it would be so much healthier than what we eat now. [ Reply | More ]

I think you have no idea of knowing what the average person from all socioeconomic classes ate, nor does there a exist a comprehensive race/class study of menarche from those time periods. You are just spouting off opinions that have no factual basis. [ Reply | More ]

not mine. And there was a time before canning too. Our diets have changed enormously in the last 100 years, in some ways better, in some ways much worse. [ Reply | More ]

Alrighty then. You don't know that the average person did or didn't get enough protein, was weaned off milk and given rice way too early as an infant, never ate meat, WHATEVER. Great that your grandma had her own garden, mine lived in the inner city, and left school at 11 to earn $ for her family. Oh, and got her period at age 9. You get me the studies and spare me the stories of grandma's vegetable garden. [ Reply | More ]

get your own studies. My grandmother was one of 13 children from a farm family in Oklahoma who ended up in NYC raising 4 children on her own. And she did end up with her own garden in the end. Do you really think the refined sugar, transfats, and tons of dairy are good for us? How about using your common sense? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Would you be offended if your children were not invited to a baby shower? People keep asking if they can bring their kids to my shower. I am not the host, but they feel the need to ask me, for whatever reason. I am telling them to ask about it when they rsvp to the host. But I have told the host I don't want kids there, it's going to get too crazy, and then there will be at least 10 kids at a 50 person shower. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

IMO it's inappropriate to have children to a baby shower. It's an adult event and no one feels like having the kids running around to look after. [ Reply | More ]

I am so sick of people assuming their children should be not only be welcomed at every event but should have food geared toward them, entertainment available, etc. DH and I went to a restaurant a few weeks ago at 9pm and there was a couple with a preschooler and toddler, bitching that their wasn't a kids' menu. Were they actually bitching about it, or just asking if there was one? Btw, 9pm is waaay to late for a preschooler and a toddler to be having dinner, don't you think? [ Reply | More ]

Absolutely too late, and annoying as hell to me who had paid for a sitter to go have an adult meal at an adult hour. And yes, they were complaining. It was an expensive restaurant with food that wouldn't necessarily appeal to all children. [ Reply | More ]
