[ - ] anyone live in a house they bought with parents (parents don't live there but you do)? we are contemplating this, but i have lots of reservations re: privacy and control issues. worried they will want to come visit whenever the heck they feel like it, regardless of what WE want. i am talking with parents about this, but worried that they will do what they want when the time comes, even if they promise not to. 65 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

General Topics 05.23.08, 06:01 PM Flag

benefits to us are that we'd live in a much nicer house than we do now, closer to my job, better schools (though my son won't be in public schools for a couple years), and our "rent" would go twd owning something (we'd split the cost 50/50). benefits to them are that they have an investment and a place to keep some of their money where they can't spend it. i'd like to leave it at that, but i'm afraid that one benefit they might want is a place to vacation whenever they want to see their grandson, get away, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, we did it bc of the school district and the fact that houses start at 1mil and we were too young at the time to afford (age 26). Some things have been great, but overall they hold the strings. It is not a good feeling. [ Reply | More ]

the above was not OP, by the way. I am OP. No, for us, this is not the only town we can live in, but the towns that are near my job and have good schools are way too expensive for us. It may ultimately mean that we have to rent and that's that. [ Reply | More ]

i'm not really saying/thinking they won't do -- i just know that i've now met with principals, talked to parents in the difft school systems, and feel that there are two districts near work that are good. the others just are not. again, we don't have to move right now, and it's not a crisis. i was just asking -- and it looks like this board is pretty unanimous about the response! He did a terrible job on the window. They finally took out their own mortgage and paid off FIL. [ Reply | More ]

put in room by himself (safe space) -- use a bedroom or bathroom and tell him that the two minutes will start when he stops yelling. Hold door shut if necessary. Or use a reward/demerit system. Every time he hits he gets x which leads to y. It doesnt matter so much which methiod you choose, but that you follow it consistently & that it matter to your child. The goal is to get him to think and make a good choice before he hits. [ Reply | More ]

Spend some one-on-one time with him where you (or dh) follow his lead; try to catch the "negative" behaviors before they escalate by being playful about it (eg, turn into a game of "I'm gonna get you", start a silly dance, etc.); change your self-talk about him so that you are seeing the positives about him and not focussing on the negatives; make sure his immediate needs have been met before adding another stressor such as visitors (eg, hunger, tiredness); talk / listen about grandpa and about new db; etc... Obviously they should have a higher 'number' of high scorers than Rye Neck, since it is a bigger school district, but I don't believe they have a higher 'proportion' of high scorers than Rye Neck. However, I do agree with you that Mamaroneck has more non-mainstream academic services than Rye Neck such as services for special needs children. For instance they have a preschool program for Special Ed children and children from economically disadvantaged homes at Mam'k Ave elem school and provide scholarships to summer camp etc to children from economically disadvantaged homes. small school vs bigger vs extra large school its all a matter of choice. Small schools in Westchester include Irvington, Hastings, Ardsley, Poncantico Hills, Dobbs Ferry, Rye Neck and Valhalla which are all good schools. Scarsdale, Chappaqua, Mamaroneck, Rye and Edgemont are bigger school districts. Then you have the large school districts like New Rochelle, Yonkers, Mt Vernon, White Plains, Greenbugh ....it all depends on what you want. Small schools tend to have more of a private school feel and more individual attention for the children. As the school gets bigger it has more of a public school feel but academics don't necessrily suffer as specially where the schools are well funded as in affluent areas. However, the largest school districts just have too many kids at the high school level and then I think is where size becomes a really huge liability and you better do a good job of staying on top of things or your child will fall through the cracks.
