Mamaroneck did not score higher on Newsweek (or US News World Report or NY Board of Ed), where did the person that posted earlier today get that info from, just curious?. All these reports are publically available online and school ranlings are also available on www.greatschools.net to anyone who wants to view them. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Mamaroneck is much bigger than Rye Neck, that is the primary difference. overall score may look lower, but they have more high scorers than rye neck, more options in high school, but if you want a little school, go with rye neck [ Reply | More ]

Obviously they should have a higher 'number' of high scorers than Rye Neck, since it is a bigger school district, but I don't believe they have a higher 'proportion' of high scorers than Rye Neck. However, I do agree with you that Mamaroneck has more non-mainstream academic services than Rye Neck such as services for special needs children. For instance they have a preschool program for Special Ed children and children from economically disadvantaged homes at Mam'k Ave elem school and provide scholarships to summer camp etc to children from economically disadvantaged homes. small school vs bigger vs extra large school its all a matter of choice. Small schools in Westchester include Irvington, Hastings, Ardsley, Poncantico Hills, Dobbs Ferry, Rye Neck and Valhalla which are all good schools. Scarsdale, Chappaqua, Mamaroneck, Rye and Edgemont are bigger school districts. Then you have the large school districts like New Rochelle, Yonkers, Mt Vernon, White Plains, Greenbugh ....it all depends on what you want. Small schools tend to have more of a private school feel and more individual attention for the children. As the school gets bigger it has more of a public school feel but academics don't necessrily suffer as specially where the schools are well funded as in affluent areas. However, the largest school districts just have too many kids at the high school level and then I think is where size becomes a really huge liability and you better do a good job of staying on top of things or your child will fall through the cracks.
