first of all I'd like to say b-day boy/girl's parents are idiots. if you want to take your 7yo to a pg-13 movie, that's your business, but don't make a b-day party surrounding one! That said, it's pretty intense. They said it would be based on scores, and since last year it was based on scaled scores (not raw scores and not percentile scores) many people assumed it would be this year, too. It doesn't bother me that they're using this lottery method within percentiles, but the lack of clarity and consistency does tick me of. If they'd just said from the outset that this is how it would work this year there would have been a lot less drama. I wouldn't have done anything differently. Did you read my posts? I don't care that they're using a lottery within percentiles. I think it's probably fairer that way to be honest. The problem is the DOE continues to be unclear and inconsistent, they make up the rules as they go along, and some of them they seem to be pulling straight out of their @sses. I'll discuss that with you. I can see the benefits of universal testing. DOE proposed it and I thought it was a good idea. As proposed they planned for a mini screening test and based on those results - a letter would be sent home and the parents would have to request the "real" g&t test to be administered. I also worry about a slight problem. I'm sure the posters on UB were not arguing this one, not the demographic - BUT - I do not believe in IQ testing all students. I do not trust any governmental agency to have this information and use it for only postitive reasons. Call me paranoid, but this country does not have a great history of serving certain populations and if it came down to it, and I were king - I would not allow mandatory IQ testing of all public school children.
