first of all I'd like to say b-day boy/girl's parents are idiots. if you want to take your 7yo to a pg-13 movie, that's your business, but don't make a b-day party surrounding one! That said, it's pretty intense. There's more than one person eaten by ants, there are people called the undead who materialize out of the walls. people get shot and catch on fire. prefer the kids in mind website for reviews. commonsense is too conservative in my view. here's the link http://www.kids-in-mind.com/i/indianajonesandthekingdomofthecrystalskull.htm [ Reply | More ]

They said it would be based on scores, and since last year it was based on scaled scores (not raw scores and not percentile scores) many people assumed it would be this year, too. It doesn't bother me that they're using this lottery method within percentiles, but the lack of clarity and consistency does tick me of. If they'd just said from the outset that this is how it would work this year there would have been a lot less drama. It's the perception that they're arbitrarily changing the rules as they go along that gets people stirred up. [ Reply | More ]

No they said percentiles. And making assumptions based on last year doesn't make any sense because they specifically said they were changing the way they were doing things. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.30.08, 07:27 AM Flag

No, they didn't say percentiles until well into the process, after all the dc had been tested. The initially said the placements would be by SCORE. Which is sufficiently vague that it's not surprising people would assume they meant the same type of scores as last year. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't have done anything differently. Did you read my posts? I don't care that they're using a lottery within percentiles. I think it's probably fairer that way to be honest. The problem is the DOE continues to be unclear and inconsistent, they make up the rules as they go along, and some of them they seem to be pulling straight out of their @sses. None of this inspires confidence. To put it mildly. That is the problem, ultimately. [ Reply | More ]

new poster to this thread. It doesn't matter in the long run, it truly doesn't. No matter what the criteria, you would have had your child tested, you would have the same score and you would still be waiting for a placement. They could change their minds 25 times and it doesn't matter in the overall scheme of things. Your child is a 99 - that's great. You will get a seat. I hope its the one you want. [ Reply | More ]

np: Have you made every rule for how you are going to parent? live? Do you not change them as experience warrants? I would argue the opposite point you make. I think that (unlike, say, the White House) the DOE reevaluating, honing their message and yes changing policy when it does not best serve the whole population is a sign of a healthy bureaucracy. They are doing what they believe is best for all. Now we can argue the "what they believe is best" point. That is fair. I just disagree with your basic premise. [ Reply | More ]

I think people simply like to complain. I also think that many have a hard time dealing with the big picture. Completely. I was saying the other day that I wanted universal G&T testing because there are a lot of really bright kids with parents who are not in the loop (for whatever reason). It was like I was talking to a brick wall. (An ugly brick wall.) [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.30.08, 08:13 AM Flag

I'll discuss that with you. I can see the benefits of universal testing. DOE proposed it and I thought it was a good idea. As proposed they planned for a mini screening test and based on those results - a letter would be sent home and the parents would have to request the "real" g&t test to be administered. I also worry about a slight problem. I'm sure the posters on UB were not arguing this one, not the demographic - BUT - I do not believe in IQ testing all students. I do not trust any governmental agency to have this information and use it for only postitive reasons. Call me paranoid, but this country does not have a great history of serving certain populations and if it came down to it, and I were king - I would not allow mandatory IQ testing of all public school children. They aren't crappy parents. Being un or ill informed about the g&t process (which changes year to year) doesn't make someone a crappy parent. As I said, I like the prescreening with an achievement test - and then the actual test if parents want, but not 100% IQ testing of children. [ Reply | More ]
