William Steig is great for kids around 4 years old because he writes about children going through great trials and tribulations without parental help. He has great female heroines also: Brave Irene, Pearl in the Amazing Bone. Also Tomie de Paola for the Strega Nona books, Helga's Dowry (another intrepid female) and especially for Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs--which I think is one of the great books for any age about death.
