It's Russell Hoban, and although I love Frances, I do not love the book where her father threatens to spank her if she doesn't go to sleep. To quote from a later part of the book: "Whack and smack made Frances think of a spanking." [ Reply | More ]

William Steig is great for kids around 4 years old because he writes about children going through great trials and tribulations without parental help. He has great female heroines also: Brave Irene, Pearl in the Amazing Bone. Also Tomie de Paola for the Strega Nona books, Helga's Dowry (another intrepid female) and especially for Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs--which I think is one of the great books for any age about death. Yes the vocabulary is very rich. That's why I love Steig. He doesn't dumb down the language just bc he's writing for children. Np [ Reply | More ]
