I said no such thing. I said they're allowed to continue if they're in good academic standing. Good academic standing doesn't mean anything better than failing. And yes, some dc struggle and stay. The same is true of the dc who come in at HS. That they struggle doesn't necessarily mean they're doing poorly, and it doesn't necessarily reflect on their intelligence. I know a current 8th grader who got in at the HS level who's having a tough time because he never learned good study habits or organizational skills. His grades are good, but the transition has been kicking his butt for the last two years. [ Reply | More ]

Nor crazy, but don't do it unless you're 110% sure you want dc at that ongoing for the long haul. Once dc is in at the preschool/pre-K level it's tough to apply out to another ongoing if you realize you don't want dc to stay for K and beyond. [ Reply | More ]

we did this-though dc still had to take erb (which was fine). it worked out for us, but I know people who didn't fare so well and had to apply out again for k. also, some schools frown upon 1 yr of preschool-plus it is hard to do, getting to know everyone knowing you are applying out. and many prek's are full of sibs (in dc's class, there were only 2 unconnected kids in the class-most sibs, legs or connected to school/families in some way). also, iyou should know you want the school-if there are schools that start at k and you focus on prek, are you going to reapply out again? having said all that, we are glad we did it. dc was really happy, ended up somewhere great. Ha! Thinking there is less competition at that stage should be wiped off your list of pros. everyone is applying to preKs these days, unless they want ss or some other specific school. Ok perhaps not everyone, but many, many...especially on uws and downtown [ Reply | More ]

Not crazy, but there is just as much competition. For example, Ethical has 36 per-K spots. For next year, there are at least 32 sibs applying, plus a large number of legacies. You have nothing to lose (but your time) in applying, but be realistic about your dc's chances of getting in. [ Reply | More ]
