CGPS. It is a solid school and far better than a public gen ed. I worked for the DOE for ten years and there are some publics I would consider over privates, but that is not one. [ Reply | More ]

Also, it depends on the private. There are other publics I would consider depending on my private choices. Also, I would pick CGPS over PS 6, but there are several private that I would pick ps 6 over. [ Reply | More ]

Here are a few. I would pick ps 234 and ps 87 over Trevor or Hewitt. Give me choices and I'll tell you what I'd do if I am familiar with the schools. [ Reply | More ]

PS 9 over trevor. Dwight interests me because of the IB, but I don't know enough about how the school actually implements it. I am not too interested by UB ideas of what is good. (Since I know that Dwight is one of their favorite schools to talk ill of). [ Reply | More ]

I think it is a fine public, but not better than even a "3rd-tier" private. [ Reply | More ]

You could simply compare the science programs in 5th grade. What does each school offer? Try the same with foreign languages. What is the 5th grade class size? [ Reply | More ]

hardly the way to compare. of course private will have more bells and whistles. but in HS, the kids from good selective publics are way more likely than the kids from 3rd tier privates to excel. perhaps its all about smarts and not the curriculum and extras? [ Reply | More ]

NP: You're questioning whether 1) innately smart kid that has proven they're able to keep up with an accelerated pace is likely to excel over 2) less innately smart kid that has gone to school in a plush library with a lot of the newest computers? Because they're smart? Have you ever met anyone who isn't really smart? There are a lot of them. Some of them are wealthy. Where do you think kids that fall into that category go? Anderson? Hunter? Why would you assume in this environment that less inately smart kids are at non-tt schools. And certainly the organization, research and writing skills private school kids are taught make and keep them competitive [ Reply | More ]

PS 199 is not a selective public school. [ Reply | More ]

well then, by your criteria, trevor would be way superior to anderso or hunter, and we know that is not true [ Reply | More ]

Science and foreign languages are bells and whistles? I think they're part of a quality education. [ Reply | More ]

if the kids aren't smart, it won't matter. you will give them everything you can think of curriculum wise, and they will do nothing with it. have seen it over and over again. smart kids will learn everything they have to. dumb kids will be handed a golden curriculum, and barely have an individual thought [ Reply | More ]

alright then. average intelligence level kids. you know, the ones with IQs around 100. those kids will get the good education, but do very little with it. [ Reply | More ]
