How does one know how to apply to Hunter for young child? Do people in preschool help with this? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

They have a web site and their process is clearly articulated there. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks very much. Do kids from the elementary school automatically get into the high school, or must they retest? [ Reply | More ]

np. They all take the test, but it's for research purposes only, not as an admissions criteria. As long as the dc is in good academic standing in the elementary school they can continue on to the high school. [ Reply | More ]

I heard from an insider that many don't do that well on it, and ould never have made it in at that level. too bad they don't publich the years of research [ Reply | More ]

I have heard many don't do well on the test, but you have to wonder if that's due to inability or lack of effort. The dc know it doesn't matter how they perform on it. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. Plus they don't do any studying/cramming for it. FWIW many also do well on it. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but that won't stop the parents who want to make themselves feel better about dc not getting in for K. They want to convince themselves the dc who did get in aren't truly up to snuff. [ Reply | More ]

I can't agree with your statement that "many will prove not to be" up to snuff. If they weren't, they wouldn't get promoted to the high school, yet according to Hunter admin most of them do. [ Reply | More ]

if your criterion for being up to snuff is avoiding failing, then yes, you are correct. [ Reply | More ]

Don't be ridiculous. DC who are barely getting by are counseled out just like at other schools. But those dc are the exception; there are not "many" of them. [ Reply | More ]

they are not promoted if they are failing out, but are otherwise allowed to continue on. you said as much yourself, and I happen to know a couple who struggle there but did not want to leave as they have spent their entire education there and all their friends are there. [ Reply | More ]

I said no such thing. I said they're allowed to continue if they're in good academic standing. Good academic standing doesn't mean anything better than failing. And yes, some dc struggle and stay. The same is true of the dc who come in at HS. That they struggle doesn't necessarily mean they're doing poorly, and it doesn't necessarily reflect on their intelligence. I know a current 8th grader who got in at the HS level who's having a tough time because he never learned good study habits or organizational skills. His grades are good, but the transition has been kicking his butt for the last two years. [ Reply | More ]

Too bad you have to resort to ad hominem attacks when you don't like how the argument is going. And I never said it was someone else's dc. You, otoh, are reporting on other people's dc. [ Reply | More ]

I did not post that. But for the record, I never gave detailed info about a specific kid. good academic standing could be getting Cs, i suppose, but it still means the kid might be better served at a different school. [ Reply | More ]

Generally, rely upon your preschool for help in getting into K at your own risk. [ Reply | More ]
