Some people believe its better. That isn't the point. 3 is progressive and there are many people who don't believe in or want a progressive education for their child. When you force them to attend a school they don't agree with, you will have 5 or 6 people in every classroom fighting the system every day. This will cause the school to implode. It serves no one. PS41 went to the DOE about his lottery, not the other way around. They were upset that they had to give up their teachers lounge and *might* have to get rid of computer room. We are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but we carefully chose our apt (and rejected many others) specifically based on the public school zone. We also paid a premium for being in the zone we're in. I will be furious if the DOE takes that away from us. This would be another example of the DOE making the public pay for the mistakes it has made (in this case, failure adequately to plan for population growth). [ Reply | More ]

I guess you are not going to answer. So, I'll just state my opinion. If you buy real estate more than a couple of years prior to entering K, I think all bets are off on any expectation you have about schools. That is why IF they rezone (and I think they should), they should give a couple of years notice so people can figure out what they are going to do. I don't think there is a huge shortage of school buildings. I think that building a handful will help and rezoning will help more. Look at the population and draw the lines accordingly. I think this will ONLY HELP schools. Individuals might complain, but I just don't see how it could hurt schools to divide the 234 population (as one example) and put 1/2 here, 1/2 there. You end up with two great schools instead of one. Call me crazy. [ Reply | More ]

I am the OR -- I was actually working and just checked back. We bought our place years ago when our oldest kid was an infant. At the time, there was no sense at all that "all bets are off" re: school zoning. In fact, the realtor tried to get us to buy outside the zone, saying that the local school often granted variances. We were not comfortable taking any chances with that and made sure to buy in the zone. [ Reply | More ]

That really sucks. We don't live in NYC anymore but when we did, we bought an apt in the PS199 zone for that very reason-- and the fact that the apt was in that zone was definitely a selling point and added to the price we paid for the apartment. [ Reply | More ]

I think that if you are looking to get an apt today, that's a reasonable assessment, but it was certainly not he case 3-5 years ago. In 2003, the UES schools were only 30% zoned kids and now they are 100% zoned and over-capacity. If the city could not predict that, I'm not sure how parents are supposed to. And it's one thing to take 3 good zones and split them into 4 schools if you are going to take some teachers from each of those schools to staff the new school and it's differnt to send 1/2 the kids from a good school zone to a mediocre neighboring school.
