OK, I read it and I'm for it as long as you give people time to regroup and rent or buy in the zone they prefer. [ Reply | More ]

well, nobody gave us a chance to regroup. we bought in wv thinking dc would go to 41 and the rug was pulled out from under us. it affects the value of our apartment too. i know, cry me a river, but the way the doe is going about this is a infuriating to some. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not buying the value of your apartment thing. Your apartment is STILL in the 41 zone. You may be forced to go to 3 with the lottery, but the value of your apartment has not been affected by this. That is a stretch. [ Reply | More ]

there are people who won't buy in the zone if there's even a chance they will wind up at 3. not the end of the world for us, i'm just putting it out there. [ Reply | More ]

Some people believe its better. That isn't the point. 3 is progressive and there are many people who don't believe in or want a progressive education for their child. When you force them to attend a school they don't agree with, you will have 5 or 6 people in every classroom fighting the system every day. This will cause the school to implode. It serves no one. It'll end up being just another not diverse standard curriculum school, with great test scores, just like 41 - and very far from being what it has always been. [ Reply | More ]

Well that sucks! It was serving a community. Its a little ironic that PS3 was STARTED because parents didn't like 41 and 41 turned around and destroyed it. [ Reply | More ]

PS41 went to the DOE about his lottery, not the other way around. They were upset that they had to give up their teachers lounge and *might* have to get rid of computer room. I know you are a 41 mom and will fight tooth and nail to challenge this, I'm not interested in fighting with you. I simply answered your question. [ Reply | More ]

You know PS3 did better than 41 this past year on the tests. They are two very different schools. Neither is the "better" school, but they both provide very high quality education. [ Reply | More ]

We are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but we carefully chose our apt (and rejected many others) specifically based on the public school zone. We also paid a premium for being in the zone we're in. I will be furious if the DOE takes that away from us. This would be another example of the DOE making the public pay for the mistakes it has made (in this case, failure adequately to plan for population growth). [ Reply | More ]

How many years BEFORE your child starts k did you buy? [ Reply | More ]

I guess you are not going to answer. So, I'll just state my opinion. If you buy real estate more than a couple of years prior to entering K, I think all bets are off on any expectation you have about schools. That is why IF they rezone (and I think they should), they should give a couple of years notice so people can figure out what they are going to do. I don't think there is a huge shortage of school buildings. I think that building a handful will help and rezoning will help more. Look at the population and draw the lines accordingly. I think this will ONLY HELP schools. Individuals might complain, but I just don't see how it could hurt schools to divide the 234 population (as one example) and put 1/2 here, 1/2 there. You end up with two great schools instead of one. Call me crazy. [ Reply | More ]

I am the OR -- I was actually working and just checked back. We bought our place years ago when our oldest kid was an infant. At the time, there was no sense at all that "all bets are off" re: school zoning. In fact, the realtor tried to get us to buy outside the zone, saying that the local school often granted variances. We were not comfortable taking any chances with that and made sure to buy in the zone. [ Reply | More ]

That really sucks. We don't live in NYC anymore but when we did, we bought an apt in the PS199 zone for that very reason-- and the fact that the apt was in that zone was definitely a selling point and added to the price we paid for the apartment. [ Reply | More ]

No one should have better things to do with their time than to support anti discrimination laws in the US. That is what the no school zone thing came from. It takes everyone. But we all make our choices. [ Reply | More ]

no one claimed otherwise. This conversation (or at least my conversation) is that realtors are no longer allowed to do this. It is against the law. It came about due to anit discrimination legislation and its something I support. No one else has to. Although, I believe they should. [ Reply | More ]

There is an article on NYT website (within last six months) that discusses. Does a much better job than I could on UB. I support most anti discrimination practices by NYC brokers. They suck. I've been in the south and in nyc and nyc is BY FAR worse in that sense. [ Reply | More ]

I think that if you are looking to get an apt today, that's a reasonable assessment, but it was certainly not he case 3-5 years ago. In 2003, the UES schools were only 30% zoned kids and now they are 100% zoned and over-capacity. If the city could not predict that, I'm not sure how parents are supposed to. And it's one thing to take 3 good zones and split them into 4 schools if you are going to take some teachers from each of those schools to staff the new school and it's differnt to send 1/2 the kids from a good school zone to a mediocre neighboring school. If it makes you feel any better, we lived in 41 zone for 18 years BEFORE our daughter was born and our L shaped studio go to small. Then we moved to Forest Hills, Queens so she could go to P.S. 101 - and learned today 101 is overcrowded and not all zoned kids will get in for Kindergarden. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, that Kindergarden is not required so they can move kids to next close school - and talked about buses. Really, they have to take us at zoned school for 1st grade? Are you sure?... [ Reply | More ]

Not 100%, but 99 percent. I think they are hoping that people just stay where they are. If I were in this situation, I would keep my dc home for the K year (I'm sahm) and then trot up there and register for first grade. [ Reply | More ]

You should go to school and ask this specifically. Say, you are not going to send your dc to K if she doesn't get a spot at this school and you will register for first. Then ask, is she guarnateed a spot for first. See what they say. [ Reply | More ]
