ped here: hard to diagnose autism at this age (no one would want to slam that label at such an early age), gross dvp (sitting) is still w/in normal range, but should at least be babbling or making noises - does he seem to hear? if you are worried, your ped should at least address it, and you can certainly get eval by ei. make sure your ped checked that there's no other organic signs, like low tone, and set-up for delayed dvp (like low apgar scores). hope that helps. i always tell parents i meet - if you're not comfortable w/your ped, switch! otherwise you're just doing your child a disservice. Doesn't she realize that all the scores did last year was qualify you for the second round and in effect the 2nd round served as this year's lottery? 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm sure she's just focused on her DC's chances this year, as you are. 2nd round was the opposite of lottery; they got to pick kids based on which kids seemed easiest to teach and/or filled out the sex/age/race balance of the class. [ Reply | More ]

op: right, but my point was that her child was no more guaranteed last year than this year. The DOE changes its policies every year and it is the luck of the draw whether the policy will help or hurt her. She is in fact being helped by this policy in that it is only the 99s that likely have a chance at Anderson, whereas in past years lower scores had an equal chance. [ Reply | More ]

oh please...every year they change the rules and you just have to play what ever card is dealt that year. A lot of 97s and 98s feel "wronged" because in any other year they would have an equal chance of getting in. if my kid were applying this year with her 99.9 I would be stuck with the same lottery, but I still wouldn't be announcing my score to the whole world and tearing my garments in mourning about the unfairness of it all. [ Reply | More ]

I doubt you would not have any of these feelings if the cards you had been dealt were like those of the playdate parent. maybe you wouldn't have been as vocal, but you would have felt some of the same sentiments for sure. if your 99.9 kid ended up at zoned public due to a lottery, you would have been unhappy, if not worried. you were lucky, others are not. its the way it goes but certainly understandable that someone is upset. how old is he? My ds, who is now 5, enjoys fine motor activies but this is a recent development. Wouldn't touch them until he was 4. (He has gross and fine motor delays, mild sensory issues and low tone.) The key was finding a supportive class environment and activities he loves. He is in a mainstream public preK. Will now draw and practice letters. He is still behind for his age but catching up. We did Kumon workbooks with him (I liked them because no cartoon characters) and that was a really good way for him to improve his skills. He also gets OT and PT outside school, though next year he will get it in the classroom. [ Reply | More ]

3.5. are you in NYC? What do you mean by a "supportive class environment"? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 06:57 PM Flag

I am in NYC. Supportive class environment means a teacher who understand all children are not the same, that children learn differently and sees value in that. My ds' teacher has made a point of encouraging my ds to write and to draw and to praise his work. She also recognizes his other strengths, and works to build and develop those (creative play, stories, imagination.) Another thing that has helped is that the school uses the "Handwriting without Tears" as part of its mainstream curriculum, meaning that the handwriting skills he learns with his OT and reinforced at school.
