Anyone who has BTDT can help? 8 month old is not very smiley, does not respond to his name, delayed physically (i.e. just started sitting, no creeping), no babbling. I am very concerned about autism. Ped is not too attentive to my worries at this point; says let's give it another few months. Any advice on what to do? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you can always request an eval through EI, don't need ped referral. Either you find out nothing is wrong or you get early help - no downside to either. [ Reply | More ]

No. It's a state run program, and free. [ Reply | More ]

I assumed she was posting from NY. Many states do have free programs. [ Reply | More ]

i also agree. mother's gut trumps doctor's degree. in my nephews case it was autism and he got approved for so many service before two years old he is doing extremly well. the early the help the better the outcome. go for it and good luck. [ Reply | More ]

I would switch peds AND get an early eval (even if you have to pay). Best of luck to you and your little one. [ Reply | More ]

ped here: hard to diagnose autism at this age (no one would want to slam that label at such an early age), gross dvp (sitting) is still w/in normal range, but should at least be babbling or making noises - does he seem to hear? if you are worried, your ped should at least address it, and you can certainly get eval by ei. make sure your ped checked that there's no other organic signs, like low tone, and set-up for delayed dvp (like low apgar scores). hope that helps. i always tell parents i meet - if you're not comfortable w/your ped, switch! otherwise you're just doing your child a disservice. Consult a good developmental pediatrician. Our ped was clueless in diagnosing DD's special needs. [ Reply | More ]

It could be that you son is on his own schedule. My daughter also started sitting only at about 7-8 mos, crawling at 11, walking at 20 mos. I did get her evaluated because i wanted to get some extra help for her thru Early Intervention. She is a normal kid who is just developing at her own speed. And all along my pediatrician did not have concerns (there are other signs that they are looking for as well). [ Reply | More ]
