[ - ] Why are New Yorkers such pricks? I'm from Western NY (Rochester) and we have some pricks here, but usually we're able to subdue them with hugs. Why doesn't that work on New Yorkers? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Even as an "insider" in the Midwest, I was always an outsider. Neighbors kept to themselves...always polite but very distant. As a kid we played with other kids, but life is very different now. My SIL keeps her kids in the house (afraid something bad will happen to them). The parks are empty when I visit home. In NYC, the parks are full and we've gotten to know other parents there. We also know (and actually talk with) all the neighbors on our floor. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I think the thing that has most exacerbated the fervent Clinton supporters' frustration, and frankly astonished me a bit, has been this endless drumbeat since February for her to drop out even though she was still winning primaries. Nobody should expect a politician who is still winning to quit. It makes no sense. It's not in their DNA. Certainly, in a race this close it made no sense whatsoever. I don't think that line has helped Obama (and I think it's why the campaign itself has been so careful not to publicly flog it.) 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

In 84 and 88, Jackson was seen as a potential party wrecker too and in 88 he took his historic campaign, in which he won 11 contests, all the way to the convention. He made a very famous speech which he ended with the chant "Keep Hope Alive," which could have easily been construed as wishing for Dukakis to fail so he could get another bite at the apple (something that people are accusing Clinton of already.) But it wasn't. [ Reply | More ]

And that's because while Jackson went to the convention trailing by 1200 delegates, he was holding a very important card, which everyone recognized and respected. You can rest assured that people were worried that his constituency, many of them first time voters who he had registered, would stay home in the fall, and so Democrats treated him and his campaign (publicly at least) with respect and deference, and rightly so. He represented the dreams and aspirations of millions of Democratic voters, after all. [ Reply | More ]

To many African Americans, a constant clamor for Jackson (or Obama if it had gone that way) to drop out of the race would have been seen as a call to go to the back of the bus. Likewise, for many of Clinton's supporters, it's been seen as a call to sit down and shut up (or "stifle" as Archie Bunker used to say to Edith.) I'm not saying it's entirely rational, but then these things rarely are. The extreme closeness of this race makes it even more frustrating and emotional for a lot of people. [ Reply | More ]

We currently live in outer borough, but considering to move. dd would be in K, and more likely to be in city wide school, but we also have a younger ds (2, which I'm not sure how he'll do). So, it kind of make sense for us to be in the city to make the option better for the younger one plus easier commute for dd, though the rent wouldn't be easy for us. 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Since I never have thought of living in the city, I wanted to do some research :-) In funny way, where dd goes doesn't matter (if she get into city wide -- can get bus service), but I'm more concerned for the choice for the younger one. Where we currently live has a decent local ps, but it'll be difficult to pick up & drop off one kid in the city and one kid in outer borough... I'm not intend to move immediately, but I wanted to get ub help (since most of you guys are city dwellers) to pick a few neighborhood to consider. TIA. [ Reply | More ]

I think it depends where #1's school is? I would tour the good nearby elementary schools next year when you can and get a feel for them. Once you have 1 in school you'll have a better feel what to look for. So if it's Anderson, you can tour PS87, 199, 9 and on the UES 6, 158, 290. If you rent you can get more space up by Columbia, an area I like a lot, and then move if #2 needs a better district. I feel like the good districts with guaranteed space for kids is changing year by year! [ Reply | More ]

thank you so much! We are not moving immediately (obviously we have to find out her placement first), but I wanted to start the research. Good luck. If you end up not moving or not buying until next year, you can meet real parents with kids in the various schools and learn more and tour a bunch of options. At least knowing where #1 will be will force you to narrow your options, which is (happiness studies show) better. [ Reply | More ]

Its not like its a bad thing! You make the best decision you can, be it boarding school, private school, public school or home schooling. My husband went to Phillips Exeter, a boarding school in NH and had a great experience and got a great education. I went to public school in Weschester and had the same great experience. Our kids are going to private school in NYC and they love it. So its just another option. Does not mean parents do not love their kids or anything like that. [ Reply | More ]

This, too, shall pass. There's not much you can do about the tantrums. She'll outgrow them eventually. You can try to avoid situations that are triggers--hunger, fatigue, over-stimulation, etc. Beyond that, you can experiment with what works best. Some kids throw tantrums because they feel out of control and are scared. If that is the case, try to hold dc. If she throws tantrum because she is not getting her way, probably best to ignore. Sometimes hard to know the diff. [ Reply | More ]

if you think she is scared. Try to hold her and tell her why you are doing it: I can see you are having trouble controlling yourself, so I'm going to help you. Logical explanations (simplified of course). Give him/her the reasons why X is not appropriate, or Y cannot be eaten/purchased/flushed/colored/swallowed/spit/kicked.... Set very specific boundaries and stick to them. Sticker chart for positive reinforcement and timeouts for negative reinf. [ - ] Anyone ever fool around, just a wee bit (i.e. no sex) with no consequences? In a major slump in my marriage, no sex for months, and a very attractive person who I'm itching to have a no-strings dalliance with. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

And how do you plan to avoid having it turn into an affair? Is this something you'd be okay with your DH doing? [ Reply | More ]

If I never found out, if he did not compromise my sexual health, and if it made him able to think clearly again, possibly. yes. [ Reply | More ]

He and I have actually had open conversations about extramarital stuff. We both feel like it's not a dealbreaker, although it would certainly be symptomatic of bigger issues. We're kind of open like that. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. But he's a good dad and a committed husband, and I'm still attracted to him. He may have, but I don't know about it. I'm not stupid, but I'm also not jealous. He's a big boy and needs to deal with his own actions. [ Reply | More ]

if you're still attracted to him, try to relight the fire between you. Not all affairs/open marriages end badly but most of the ones that I've known of do. If you're so confident that it won't be a big deal with him, why not let him know in advance so that you're not filing for divorce in a year? [ Reply | More ]
