Why are New Yorkers such pricks? I'm from Western NY (Rochester) and we have some pricks here, but usually we're able to subdue them with hugs. Why doesn't that work on New Yorkers? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Maybe your problem is that you want to touch a New Yorker. No hugs please! I've lived all over the country and New Yorkers are the MOST friendly people of anyplace I've lived! [ Reply | More ]

Agreed. Born, raised in Midwest & live in NYC now. We are friends with our NYC neighbors, but never got to know our Midwestern neighbors (just wave as you mow the lawn). Yes, NYers are much more friendly and open. [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in NYC and never knew the people across the street. My DH from Bismarck was in and out of every kid's house on the block. These sort of generalizations are silly. [ Reply | More ]

ITD - my entire family is midwestern and I've known others - it's not fake. Ime, nyers are simply more narcissistic, but can still be quite friendly. [ Reply | More ]

Even as an "insider" in the Midwest, I was always an outsider. Neighbors kept to themselves...always polite but very distant. As a kid we played with other kids, but life is very different now. My SIL keeps her kids in the house (afraid something bad will happen to them). The parks are empty when I visit home. In NYC, the parks are full and we've gotten to know other parents there. We also know (and actually talk with) all the neighbors on our floor. [ Reply | More ]
