[ - ] I'm going back to school and need to send 3yo ds to a school or daycare environment. He's at a church "preschool" now for a few mornings per week (we live in the south). I need to decide by Augs. to either keep him at the church school, which will be offering extended hours or send him to Montessori. The only other option is straight daycare. We're not religious at all and the church is baptist, which doesn't really bother me, we just don't talk about Jesus or religion at home. He's very shy and I've heard that Montessori is great for shy kids. Anyone have suggestions? Obviously, Montessori would be more expensive, but we just want to do what is right for him and keep him there for 2 years before Kindergarten. 23 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My son is in Montessori and it is a nurturing environment and also helps kids become more self confident and independent. Ignore the posters who say it is not. If it is accredited with either AMI or AMS, it is truly a Montessori...otherwise it is simply Montessori-inspired, which may or may not follow the curriculum. Many people do not understand Montessori - so do not listen to someone who is uninformed. [ Reply | More ]

Montessori - wherever they are - is accredited by 2 "governing" bodies...AMI and AMS. No matter where you are in the U.S., they apply the same standards. If a schools is not accredited by either, then it is not really a Montessori. [ Reply | More ]

The above advice is terrible. If you have a rough delivery, like I did, it will be so much worse if you have no idea what the f*ck is happening and what your options are. You REALLY want to be on top of what all the interventions are and what the downsides can be--especially if you're delivering at a "top" hospital in nyc. Whatever you can do to make your own labor progress and to labor on your own is going to help you a lot in the long run. Take a class at Realbirth. FWIW, I was really blase about childbirth education and really regretted it. [ Reply | More ]

1) teacher ratio to kid ration 1 to 12 for first 4 grades. 2) specials are done on half a class so remaining 12 students are then split into two groups by the two teachers 3) Everything is individualized--if a child can do 3rd or 4th grade math in 1st grade it is given to them 4) Lots of masters in gifted education from Hunter college 5) Both art and studio art (ceramics and woodworking) 7) advanced curriculum--but accelerated and enriched and very progressive in early years to follow the interests of the child 8) They are completely in charge of their own curriculum and have been putting in a lot of positive changes since new principal arrived 10. Don't teach to the tests 11. Only nominally affected by DOE cuts because most funding is through CUNY, 12. Faculty turnover is mixed 15. Getting better in this area [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if they really do or not. Perhaps no other school has chess or a separate math lab as a special, and those classes take the place of one art or science class. didn't mean it to be rude. i just think it's very true. the biggest difference in public vs private is that in private, parents have more control. and it's not always a bad thing. i am religious and i don't want my dcs to be the "weirdos" so i send them to a private religious school where they are the norm and the school is reinforcing the lifestyle we lead. Just because they pay for education? My child is in public. She's getting a govt mandates education, her teacher has very little time to teach (her words) the way she could twenty years ago. Kids are prepped for tests, not the kind of tests that expand or deepen knowledge, tests that are designed to prove another point entirely. If we could afford private she could have gym four times a week, music four times a week, art five times a week, the education would be individualized if she needed it. My dd's public teaches to the middle, so wer'e lucky but I wish she could be in private where they still teach the top kids too. [ Reply | More ]

Private schools are far better for the average student--they really maximize a students abilities. For the brighter than average student, public can be better. The smartest kids, not the richest, are in public and if that's your peer group that's optimal. [ Reply | More ]

South Bay is anywhere from Manhattan Beach (which would be close-ish to Venice/SM) to Carson and Compton. Long Beach is south of that - could be in a very nice area, but very south of where you want to be. Antelope Valley is way way north of anything. And that leaves the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. They're basically next to each other - SF to the west of SG. Both valleys have nice areas and not so nice areas. And they're both to the north of Silver Lake and SM - where you want to be. [ Reply | More ]
