I'm going back to school and need to send 3yo ds to a school or daycare environment. He's at a church "preschool" now for a few mornings per week (we live in the south). I need to decide by Augs. to either keep him at the church school, which will be offering extended hours or send him to Montessori. The only other option is straight daycare. We're not religious at all and the church is baptist, which doesn't really bother me, we just don't talk about Jesus or religion at home. He's very shy and I've heard that Montessori is great for shy kids. Anyone have suggestions? Obviously, Montessori would be more expensive, but we just want to do what is right for him and keep him there for 2 years before Kindergarten. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you need to talk to peoplke in your area. Here, Montessouri is very non-nurturing. It depends on where you are. [ Reply | More ]

My son is in Montessori and it is a nurturing environment and also helps kids become more self confident and independent. Ignore the posters who say it is not. If it is accredited with either AMI or AMS, it is truly a Montessori...otherwise it is simply Montessori-inspired, which may or may not follow the curriculum. Many people do not understand Montessori - so do not listen to someone who is uninformed. [ Reply | More ]

ita, we're in Montessori in NJ and it's a "true" Montessori - couldn't be more supportive - but it's not for everyone/all kids [ Reply | More ]

I'm not uninformed. OP is in the south, you have no idea if the Montessouri where she is would be exactly the same as your area. [ Reply | More ]

Montessori - wherever they are - is accredited by 2 "governing" bodies...AMI and AMS. No matter where you are in the U.S., they apply the same standards. If a schools is not accredited by either, then it is not really a Montessori. [ Reply | More ]

Telling someone to ignore the posters who disagree with you is very closed minded. [ Reply | More ]

I said to ignore people who are uninformed about it. My post goes on to explain about curriculum and accrediting of Montessori schools. The OR doesn't even know how to spell Montessori correctly...shows you how informed she is. [ Reply | More ]

See if you would have gone to Montessori (a properly accredited one, that is) you would know how to deal with conflict instead of being so abrasive. [ Reply | More ]

clearly you know nothing about Montessori because a Montessori alum would never behave in such a manner. [ Reply | More ]

aww your family must have been too poor to foot the bill for Montessori. Lord knows you would have benefited from the courtesy lessons. [ Reply | More ]

It was hardly a word choice issue. Please review your own vulgar post. [ Reply | More ]

Actually yes, my family was too poor to send me to Montessori. I, however, am not too poor to send my kids there. I choose not to. The Montessori school here is non-nurturing and nowhere near the kind of environment I want for my kids. OP is long gone for sure, but Montessori is not the answer for everyone everywhere. Surely you can agree with that. [ Reply | More ]

Montessori has produced four of the most self-centered kids I have ever met, from different families, in different states. Unable to relate to other kids or play well with others. I'm sure its all a huge coincedence. [ Reply | More ]

there are self centered kids who go to every kind of preschool program in existence...has nothing to do with Montessori or any curriculum. Has more to do with what is going on at home than anything else. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. Montessori programs are only as good as the directors/teachers/board. It can be wildly different from one school to another. Talk to parents at the school [ Reply | More ]
