I was one of the moms using those kinds of ladies to sit, but I do recognize that better ones charged more. For that money, you don't get anyone who's particularly attentive, creative, or does playdates, etc. She allows the child to remain in her setting, under her rules, and doesn't really go out of her way to make the place an ideal situation for children necessarily. So if her teens are playing Halo3 and the baby is plopped down there too, no big deal. [ Reply | More ]

I think the people responding to this post live in a very small world. What do all of you think nanny's with children pay for child care? An at home daycare in many parts of the outerbouroughs will be around $150/wk. That's what my nanny paid. And when her dd was old enough for pre-k she went to the YMCA in Flatbush where the UPK part was free and she paid on a sliding scale for the rest of the day (11:30 to 6pm, lunch included) and I think it came to $200/wk. She learned to read and write in that program, they had her tested on site for G&T and she is now getting all 4s in her G&T 2nd grade class. Just b/c it's not manhattan rates doesn't mean it's bad. NYC is made up of lots of different economies. [ Reply | More ]

if you really want to make such a big production out of it maybe you could call 311 (that's if you are in NYC) and get in touch with some outreach groups. They might be able to help you out. Maybe your kids' school can arrange something like that for you and the entire class? [ Reply | More ]

I want the kids to be able to see and learn from a real homeless person. When they needed to learn about the Korean War, I found a veteran to come to dinner and talk. So I am sure a homeless person could do the same thing. [ Reply | More ]

Many people who work in homeless shelters were once homeless. Contact a shelter and ask if an employee/volunteer could speak to church/group etc. No, you don't want just any person speaking to a group of children -- ie, a schizophrenic or a using heroin addict. [ Reply | More ]

As others note, this is a ridiculous premise. If something like a homeless spokesmodel actually existed, do you think they'd just go around talking about how their life sucks for free? If they got paid, then eventually they wouldn't be homeless, so.. There are surely resources you can find to learn about the reasons people tend to become homeless, but surely you must realize that it could be a myriad of causes. Seems to me it boils down to bad choices or bad luck. I don't really get why you're on this whole approach to begin with, though. It smacks of some personal guilt at your own aversion to the homeless combined with an apparent discovery of your childrens' ignorance. Or something like that. [ Reply | More ]

ask around, certainly. and think about what you want for her. do you want a teacher that pushes, a teahcer that makes learning fun, do you want group lessons, or private? in the home or at a studio. my personal recommendation for those questions are: that children learn better (adn faster) when they are having fun, the learn better in a studio away from home (without all the distractions and the feeling that it is not like a class), and they learn better in a group classbecause it is more fun and because children learn better from each other. also, you do not neccessarily need a teacher who plays well, you just need a teacher who teaches well. make sure that the teacher understands how to teach the basics. if your kid is playing something difficult early on, most likely that they are not learning the basics ...rhythm is first. ^^^^also, look for a teacher who prepares her lessons beforehand and hands out assignments of some type. not just jottiing stuff on a note pad. the music should have markings on it. and the teacher should not play the pieces beforehand. oh, and finally, i would stay away from suzuki. YES!!! that is the best way to learn. there is a game from music in motion web site called, 'muwsical adventures'. my kids love it. (students) and then what i do is i create games that kids know and love and make it into a musical game, like musical candy land (all the red squares depict the note Middle C (on the board and the card), for example, or musical trivial pursuit. the web site that i suggested is great. so glad you want to teach it in a fun way. ^^^^here are some other ideas. make some cards and each card says something like, 'go up a second', or 'go up a third'. you can put animals on middle C and pick a card. the goal is to move up the keyboard and whomever gets to the top first, wins (though you both win, because you both get to play) if you stick on stickers of instruments and they can name them, they can repeat the card during their turn.
